A newly added nameplate for the 2021 Honda CR-V range is the VTi X, which slots in at $35,990 (MSRP) and offers a five-seat layout with a few additional features. The VTi X essentially replaces the old VTi-S model.

As with all VTi models it runs the same 1.5-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine producing 140kW of power and 240Nm of torque, and it’s still a front-wheel drive (2WD) and has a CVT auto transmission. Fuel use for this grade is claimed at 7.3L/100km.

This model ushering in niceties over the VTi five seater below it, such as a hands-free tailgate, auto headlights, auto high beam lights, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, in-built GPS Garmin sat nav as part of the standard 7.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. That stereo also incorporates Bluetooth, and has eight speakers.

Plus the screen doubles up as a display for Honda’s LaneWatch side camera system - which is used in lieu of a traditional blind-spot monitoring system - and the VTi X is the first grade in the range to get rear parking sensors standard, plus it has front parking sensors, too. You also get the Honda Sensing suite of safety tech, including forward collision warning and auto emergency braking with pedestrian detection, as well as lane keeping assist and lane departure warning. You don’t get any proper blind spot monitoring or rear cross-traffic, no rear AEB either. The CR-V range carries over its 2017 five-star ANCAP score, but under 2020 criteria no version of the CR-V would score five stars.

The VTi X can be visually differentiated by its 18-inch wheels (17s on the models below), but it still has halogen headlights and LED daytime running lights, as well as LED tail-lights. It also has keyless entry and push-button start, four USB ports (2x front and 2x rear), a cargo cover, exhaust pipe finishers, and adaptive cruise control.
