The GT is the top of the range for the Mazda2 hatchback line-up, with its updated version starting from $27,610 before on-roads and adding some extra interior touches and comfort features.
It’s also available in a sedan body style with the same features and at the same price.
Its 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine is the same as the rest of the range, tweaked compared to the pre-facelift at the cost of a tiny amount of power and torque in order to improve efficiency.
The engine makes 81kW and 142Nm, but now claims a consumption rate of 5.0L/100km, which is 0.3L/100km less than before. The Mazda2 can run on 91RON or E10.
The 1.5-litre unit drives the front wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission.
Standard features for the range include a 7.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability, a six-speaker sound system, auto headlights and auto windscreen wipers.
Like the Evolve, the GT gets satellite navigation, climate control air conditioning rather than just standard A/C, and a mesh grille in black flanked by daytime running lights, plus it also gains black leather-upholstered seats with ‘Grand Luxe’ synthetic suede and red trim elements.
The GT scores a unique set of aero-inspired 16-inch alloy wheels in silver and black.
The dimensions are the same as the rest of the range, with the hatch coming in at 4085mm long, 1695mm wide, 1504mm tall, and with a 2570mm wheelbase.
The sedan is slightly longer but less tall, coming in at 4360mm long, also 1695mm wide, 1479mm tall, and with the same 2570mm wheelbase.
It adds some extra safety gear on top of the standard suite of 'i-Activsense' safety tech, which includes 'Smart City Brake Support' for operating forward and reverse, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.
Included for the GT is Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR) as well as an ‘Active Driving Display’ head-up display, plus a surround-view parking camera and a front parking sensor. The GT also gains a radar cruise control function.
It has six SRS airbags as well as ISOFIX anchor points and top tethers for child seats in the rear. The Mazda2 range is covered by Mazda’s five-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty.
