Isuzu D-Max 2024

The 2024 Isuzu D-Max range of configurations is currently priced from $32,200.

Carsguide Senior Journalist Tom White had this to say at the time: It’s a tough test for two tough utes, which are more evenly matched than we first expected. It’s clear both also make great alternatives to the HiLux or Ranger.

The Isuzu D-Max Ute competes with similar models like the Volkswagen Amarok, Nissan Navara and Mazda BT-50 in the Under $40k category category.

Isuzu D-Max 2024 Accessories

The 2024 Isuzu D-Max is available in six trim levels, including a new-for-2024 X-Rider grade.

The entry-level SX gets a vinyl floor, cloth seats, powered windows and mirrors, and air-conditioning with rear vents. Tech is handled by a new 8.0-inch central touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, pairing with four speakers, while an also-new 4.2-inch screen sits in the driver’s binnacle. You also get 17-inch steel wheels, and automatic wipers and halogen headlights.

Stepping up to LS-M trim gets you new and softer rear suspension, a higher-grade cloth interior treatment, bi-LED headlights and DRLs, 17-inch alloy wheels and body-coloured mirrors, door handles and tailgate handle. If you can spring for this trim, it feels like the sweet spot of the lower-range models.

Next there’s the new X-Rider which was once was a special edition but now rejoins as a permanent member of the family. It’s all about upping the street credibility, so there’s black gloss on the grille and a black underbody spoiler, as well as black on the rear step bar, the mirrors, door handles and tailgate handle, the B-Pillars, the sports bar and on the soft tonneau cover. There are also black 17-inch alloy wheels, and dark grey sidesteps.

Next up is the LS-U, which ups the cabin tech with a new 9.0-inch central screen, but with tactile dials for volume — fixing what was apparently a big complaint about the outgoing D-Max – as well as a new 7.0-inch Driver Display. There’s also keyless entry and push-button start, including a new welcome light that illuminates the interior when you approach, dual-zone climate control and a nicer interior treatment. Outside, there’s a tub liner, silver sidesteps, chrome on the handles and mirrors and 18-inch alloys.

The LS-U+ then adds leather seats which are heated in the front, and are eight-way power-adjustable for the driver, and four-way power-adjustable for the front passenger.

Finally, the flagship X-Terrain gets red stitching across its leather interior, remote engine start, a rolling tonneau cover, a unique sport bar, dark grey sidesteps, mirrors, handles and roof rails, and 18-inch matte-grey alloys wheels.

Isuzu D-Max 2024 Q&As

Check out real-world situations relating to the Isuzu D-Max here, particularly what our experts have to say about them.

  • Issues with 2011 Isuzu D-Max cooling system

This really does sound a bit like a head gasket problem. Even though the coolant and oil aren’t mixing (as you might expect with a blown head gasket) if the gasket blows between the coolant passages and the combustion chamber, the pressure of the engine’s combustion (particularly when the turbocharger is boosting when, say, climbing a long hill) can pressurise the cooling system, leading to the sorts of problems you’re having, including ejecting the coolant all over the place.

But until you’ve done a couple of simple checks, there’s no way of knowing whether there’s a blockage or other problem with the cooling system that is allowing the engine to become too hot. At that point, the coolant will also force its way out of the engine with a similar set of symptoms. A chemical check (called a TK test) will be able to identify whether combustion gasses are finding their way into the coolant, suggesting a head gasket failure., A good mechanic should also be able to tell if there’s a blockage in the coolant system or a problem with the coolant pump.

  • What tow vehicle or hybrid camper should I consider for after retirement?

The last decade of dual-cab four-wheel-drive utes have emerged as the tow-vehicles of choice, and you see them everywhere filling roles exactly like the one you have planned. Popular models include the Ford Ranger you’ve nominated, Toyota HiLux, Mazda BT-50, VW Amarok, Mitsubishi Triton, Nissan Navara and Isuzu D-Max. But there are also cheaper alternatives including makes like the South-Korean made Ssangyong and various Chinese brands like LDV and Great Wall.

Just make sure you know exactly how much you need to tow before making a decision as some of the cheaper models don’t have the same outright towing capacity and even if they do, some of them don’t have the engine performance to make towing as easy as it should be. For parts availability, the Toyota would be king in really remote areas, but any of the major brands are pretty well covered in Australia.

Meantime, don’t rule out ute-based wagons such as the Ford Everest, Isuzu MU-X, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport and Toyota Fortuna. These offer better ride comfort when unladen thanks to more sophisticated rear suspensions and most have as much or almost as much towing capacity as their ute brethren.

  • My 2019 Isuzu D-Max doesn't display the gear I'm in

The digital displays on modern cars are known to sometimes randomly fail for no apparent reason. Sometimes it’s the whole display that fritzes, other times just a smaller part of the display will disappear. Usually, replacing the LED module is the fix.

From memory, this model D-Max groups the fuel and temperature gauges, odometer and the gear position information into a small unit in the middle of the dash binnacle. Which means it might be a bit complicated re-connecting the temperature and fuel tank sensor units to the new module, as well as making sure the new odometer reads the correct mileage for the vehicle. An auto electrician should be able to handle it, though.

Technically, of course, any car without a working gear-position indicator is unroadworthy, so this needs to be fixed rather than ignored.

  • Issues with an Isuzu D-Max's SVS dash light

This is a tricky one because the D-Max’s SVS warning light seems to be a bit of an all-rounder. That is, it indicates a fault, but a non-specific one. Certainly not one that can be read by the majority of aftermarket scanning tools. Logic suggests there’s something within the driveline that is getting too hot for the computer’s liking, a theory backed up by the fact that it only triggers when you’re towing a big load and the car is working its hardest.

The solution seems to be to present the car at an Isuzu dealership as this may be the only workshop that will have the D-Max-specific scanning gear to determine the cause or even narrow it down.

For the record, the SVS stands for Service Vehicle Soon, but I’m afraid even that’s a fairly generic recommendation and doesn’t get you any closer to the cause. That said, when engine oil or transmission fluid gets beyond a certain temperature, the computer will often detect this and call for a change of fluids as a means of driveline protection. This could be what’s happening every time you tow.

Isuzu D-Max 2024 Interior

Inside, the brand describes the 2024 Isuzu D-Max cabin as a mix of utility and comfort, and that’s feels pretty accurate from the driver’s seat.

The tech is new, with the 8.0- or 9.0-inch central screen joined by USB connection points, and there’s a new Digital Driver Display screen in the mix, along with new seat materials and trims, too.

But back to that that mix of utility and comfort. I’m not sure Isuzu has gotten the mix exactly right. There are plenty of soft-touch materials in the higher-trim levels, just not always where I want them to be.

I don’t know about you, but I like to have my elbow up when driving, and that plastic is still scratchy and hard, as is the place where my knee touches the centre console.

The 2024 Isuzu D-Max’s powertrains remain unchanged, with the four-cylinder choice of a 1.9-litre turbo-diesel good for 110kW and 350Nm, or a 3.0-litre turbo-diesel producing 140kW and 450Nm. They are paired with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic, and two- or four-wheel drive, depending on the model.

Isuzu D-Max 2024 Seats

The 2024 Isuzu D-Max dual-cab is the kind of five-seat ute that makes it clear why these vehicles now double as family haulers. There's space aplenty in both rows, even if you want to have three adult-sized humans in the rear.
