The biggest car in Audi's fleet is the large Q7 seven-seat SUV, which went on sale in 2006 as the German luxury brand's first ever SUV offering.

Priced from $117,284 to $136,815, the Audi Q7 competes against the likes of the BMW X5, Lexus LX, and Mercedes-Benz GLE in the large luxury SUV segment. The all-new second generation Q7 was launched in 2015 on top of the brand new MLB platform and has trim levels stretching from the base Q7 45 TDI Quattro Mhev to the top Q7 50 TDI S Line Quattro Mhev. Available as a seven-seater, the Q7 offers just one engine choice; a potent 3.0-litre turbo-diesel mated to an eight-speed auto and all-wheel drive system.

Audi Q7 FAQs

Does the moon-roof affect towing capacity on the 2013 Audi Q7

That’s a fair question, because the subject of towing limits is a pretty topical one right now as caravans get heavier and heavier and the police crack down harder on overloaded vehicles. That said, Audi makes no distinction between the towing capacity of its Q7 based on what accessories (including the moon-roof) are fitted.

But it definitely pays to remember that many vehicles, once hitched up to their heaviest legal towed load, can then be very close to their Gross Combination Mass (GCM) which is the mass of the trailer, the vehicle and everything in it including people, fuel, luggage and any aftermarket accessories fitted to it.

As an example, there’s one US-made ute on the market now that, when towing its maximum legal load, is so close to its GCM (has so little payload remaining) that it could only be legally operated by one small person with no luggage, nothing in the tray and no fuel in the tank.

Why are there slits near the rear passenger windows of my 2008 Audi Q7?

From memory, that model Audi Q7 had the option of rear window sunshades which are a great addition and should really be standard on any car sold in Australia. In this model, the shades were manually operated so you need to grab a small tab and pull the blind upwards to fix it in place. If the tabs are missing, the shade may be broken or may have been removed by a previous owner, leaving just the empty slot in the door trim.

Some cars also had electronically-operated shades, so a check of the owner’s manual may reveal where the relevant button is located. If the shades are missing, you may be able to find an aftermarket replacement that uses the same factory mounting points. There are lots of aftermarket choices online.

Why is Audi Q8 more expensive than the Q7?

Even though the Q7 is larger than the Q8 and shares much of the same technology, Audi justifies a considerably price hike on the Q8 due to its more sport-focused powertrain options which boost performance. The Q8 is available in V6, V8 or full-electric guises, with the choice of petrol, diesel, hybrid and battery electric powertrains. The Q7 is only offered in petrol or diesel, the majority of which are in V6 guises with one V8 option. The top-spec SQ8 shares much of its underpinnings with the Lamborghini Urus.

Audi Q7 Seats

The Audi Q7 is a seven-seat SUV, with a standard front pair of electrically adjustable seats and a bench second row with individually adjustable seats - including the middle seat.

The third row of two seats is spacious enough, with the seats able to be folded down or raised electrically via buttons found in the boot or near the side rear doors.

Audi Q7 Accessories

There are three screen in the Audi Q7 - a main 10.1-inch touchscreen, the 12.3-inch driver display, and an 8.6-inch touchscreen.

The seats up front are leather, heated and electrically adjustable, while there are adjustable leather seats in the second row, plus four-zone climate control, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and a wireless phone charger.

Audi Q7 Boot Space

The Q7 has a claimed luggage capacity of roughly 295 litres with all seven seats up, 780L with the third row folded down, and 1908L with the second row folded.

Audi Q7 Engine

Aside from the 45 TFSI, which runs a 2.0-litre, four cylinder turbo-petrol engine making 185kW and 370Nm, all the Q7 variants have a 3.0-litre turbo V6.

The 45 TDI is a turbo-diesel 3.0-litre V6 that makes 170kW and 500Nm, while the 50 TDI is also a turbo-diesel but puts out 210kW and 600Nm.

The 55 TFSI is a petrol-powered version of the V6, and makes 250kW and 500Nm

All variants are all-wheel drive, with power transfered via an 8-speed automatic gearbox.

Audi Q7 Speed

Audi claims the base-grade 45 TFSI will hit 100km/h in 7.3 seconds, though the V6-equipped versions are quicker.

The 45 TDI is, of course, a turbo-diesel and knocks over 100km/h in 7.1 seconds, Audi says.

The 50 TDI is also powered by a turbo-diesel unit and can hit 100km/h is a claimed 5.9 seconds.

Finally, the 55 TFSI boasts a 5.9-second claimed 0-100km/h time.

Audi Q7 Range

Both diesel-powered Q7s (45 TDI and 50 TDI) have 75-litre fuel tanks and respectively claimed 7.0L/100km and 7.1L/100km consumption figures, meaning they should theoretically get more than 1000km out of a fill.

The petrol variants vary slightly more. They both have 85-litre tanks, but the 45 TFSI has a claimed 9.3L/100km efficiency figure and the V6 TFSI 55 a 9.0L/100km figure.

Even in the 45 TFSI, you should theoretically be able to top 900km on a tank.

As always, real-world factors like traffic, driving style and even the topography of your route will certainly lower the distances you’re able to cover.
