What are the standard two car garage dimensions in Australia?

The standard double garage size in this country is about 6.0 metres long x 6.0 metres wide with a door size of 5.2m and a minimum ceiling height of 2.3 metres.

Exciting stuff, indeed, but an important set of measurements when you’ve thought about housing your beloved collection of two – yes, two – Lada Nivas (“Nothing goes harder than a Lada!”).

However, these double garage dimensions, calculated to be big enough for two cars, vary depending on the size of your house, the size of your property, as well as which local government area your house is in and what your local council’s policy is on double garage measurements. These rules also apply to carport dimensions for 2 cars.

Having said that, the minimum 2 car garage dimensions – 5.4m long x 5.4m wide with a door size of 4.8m and a ceiling height of 2.3 metres – must be taken into account.

But a garage is more than merely a garage, right? It’s a location so important, so sacred, that its nickname must have capital letters peppered throughout it … and so it’s a Bit of Peace and Quiet, a Man Cave, a Happy Place, a Fortress of Solitude or even, to those who are loose of morals, a Den of Ill Repute…

Well, no, a two car garage is exactly what its name implies: a 2 bay garage designed to accommodate two cars.

What is the benefit of having a two car garage? Well, apart from being able to safely house two cars, often a garage will also have room enough for you to store your tools, spares, gym equipment, adult board games, cheeky cosplay outfits and that exercise bike you never use, which has rapidly become something on which you hang your washing. Convenient.

How big is a double garage? and How wide is a double garage? are both crucial questions you need to ask yourself when contemplating the meaning of life… or just how to accommodate your two conveyances of choice.

Well, here’s a tip. Look back up this page just a couple of paragraphs because I’ve already answered those two queries, you ratbag.

Garage depth – how long it is – is another serious consideration when determining if a garage is right for you. The more space, the better but it all has to be useable room.

Again, ideally your two-car garage is at least 6.0m by 6.0m, but a minimum of 5.4m by 5.4m will suffice in accordance with Australian Standards.

However, there are numerous other things to consider when working out the appropriate sizing of a garage that will suit you and your family, including, but certainly not limited to, the actual car size (with doors open, aerial raised etc); general storage around the vehicle(s); as well as the potential open functional space in the garage, even with two cars inside.

The average double garage size in Australia is intended to be able to cope with a large car (5.0m long by 1.9m wide) or medium SUV (4.8m by 1.9m), but larger garages – able to house utes, trailers and big US-style pick-ups – and bigger carports with even more square metres of space are not a rarity in Australia.

These oversized 2 car garage dimensions shrug off the minimum 2 car garage dimensions of 5.4m long x 5.4m wide with a door size of 4.8m and a ceiling height of 2.3 metres and bulge to even greater sizes. But, be aware, council regulations apply so check before you make any changes.

You may decide to extend the existing garage attached to your house in order to cope with your changing vehicular needs but, bear in mind, this will also incur more costs.

A carport – kind of a permanent open-air sunshade for your car – may offer a (somewhat) happy compromise, but it offers less protection from the elements and less security than a lockable enclosed garage.

Freestanding garages in Australia are available in many shapes and sizes and if it’s a pre-fabricated garage you can even have a crack at erecting it yourself, but even though the old adage ' the bigger, the better' still rings true, it’s important to remember the larger the structure you build or give the green light to, the more expensive it will be to create, in terms of building materials, labour etc.

No matter what you do, how big you build or how much you spend on your garage, in order to maintain the moral high ground, make sure that while creating your monstrosity – I mean, low-key-classy residential vehicular-storage facility – you must always – always – follow to the nth degree every applicable rule and regulation set out by your local council, your state and federal government, Australian Standards, and your mother-in-law.
