2022 Porsche Taycan price and features: Tesla Model S rival and Audi e-tron GT twin goes rear-wheel drive in line-up expansion

The rear-wheel-drive version of the Taycan is simply known as Taycan.

As part of an update for the pioneering all-electric model, Porsche Australia has confirmed two new variants of the Taycan large car, including the first rear-wheel-drive sedan, with the order books now open ahead of deliveries starting early next year.

Priced from $156,300 plus on-road costs, the RWD sedan is simply known as Taycan and is powered by a rear electric motor that produces 300kW/345Nm with the standard 79.2kWh battery or 350kW/357Nm with the optional 93.4kWh unit.

Either way, the RWD sedan sprints from a standstill to 100km/h in 5.4 seconds and has a top speed of 230km/h, although the larger battery does have a longer range (434km) and more charging power (270kW) than the smaller item (369km/225kW).

The other new version is the 4 Cross Turismo ($176,600), which is an all-wheel-drive high-riding wagon that adds a front electric motor for combined outputs of 350kW/500Nm.

The 4 Cross Turismo comes with the larger battery as standard, hits triple digits in 5.1s, has a terminal velocity of 220km/h, lasts 437km between charges and can be topped up with 270kW of grunt.

As for the rest of the Taycan line-up, the 4S (+$4300), Turbo (+$7800) and Turbo S (+$7300) grades are now more expensive (see full pricing table below), although their list of standard equipment has become longer.

New for MY22 is speed-sensitive power steering (already fitted to Turbo S), grey windscreen top tinting, a head-up display, Android Auto support, Traffic Jam Assist and a tyre repair kit (sealant with an electric air compressor).

For reference, the RWD sedan and 4 Cross Turismo have the same features plus adaptive LED headlights, power-folding side mirrors, keyless entry, rear privacy glass, digital radio, a heated steering wheel, 14-way power-adjustable front comfort seats and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.

Advanced driver-assist systems extend to adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, surround-view cameras and front and rear parking sensors, while rear-side airbags are also included.

It’s also worth noting the Turbo and Turbo S variants of the Tesla Model S rival and Audi e-tron GT twin have also added an onboard 22kW AC charger for quicker charging times at home or the office.

Justin’s dad chose to miss his birth because he wanted to watch Peter Brock hopefully win Bathurst, so it figures Justin grew up to have a car obsession, too – and don’t worry, his dad did turn up in time after some stern words from his mum. That said, despite loving cars and writing, Justin chose to pursue career paths that didn’t lend themselves to automotive journalism, before eventually ending up working as a computer technician. But that car itch just couldn’t be scratched by his chipped Volkswagen Golf R (Mk7), so he finally decided to give into the inevitable and study a Master of Journalism at the same time. And even with the long odds, Justin was lucky enough to land a full-time job as a motoring journalist soon after graduating and the rest, as they say, is history. These days, Justin happily finds himself working at CarsGuide during the biggest period of change yet for the automotive industry, which is perhaps the most exciting part of all. In case you’re wondering, Justin begrudgingly sold the Golf R (sans chip) and still has plans to buy his dream car, an E46 BMW M3 coupe (manual, of course), but he is in desperate need of a second car space – or maybe a third.
