2025 Xpeng G6: Australian launch variants and options locked in to "destroy the competition" like Tesla Model Y, but will the price be right?

Xpeng’s Australian importer, TrueEV, has opened online pre-orders for its upcoming G6 electric SUV.

The configurator, which takes a very familiar theme to many new-age direct-to-customer models – particularly Tesla – shows two launch variants, as alluded to by the brand at its launch announcement earlier in 2024.

The G6 will initially arrive in Standard Range and Long Range variants, both rear-wheel drive options will be equipped with an 800-volt battery.

The Standard range variant has a maximum outputs of 190kW/440Nm, and will offer 435km of driving range according to the WLTP standard. Meanwhile, the Long range offers a slight power boost to 210kW/440Nm, but offers up to 570km of driving range on the WLTP cycle.

The brand confirmed that an all-wheel drive variant is planned, but it likely won’t arrive until early 2025.

Launch options include five colours: white, silver, grey, black, and orange, while the interior can be chosen in either a black or white theme.

20-inch ‘sport’ alloy wheels are the only option on either variant.

For the time being, a spot in the pre-order queue can be secured with a “fully refundable deposit of $1000.” Initial deliveries are described as being expected in Q4 of this year, and will be able to be picked up from “delivery centres” in Sydney Brisbane or Melbourne. The brand is also offering a free home delivery service “for most locations.”

Other recent news for the brand internationally has included winning a range and efficiency test in Norway, where the Xpeng G6 outperformed 26 rivals. At the time the importer’s CEO Jason Clarke said: “We knew when we chose Xpeng for the Australian market, they were going to destroy the competition and these results only confirm that.”

“The G6’s range and charging efficiency is one of a kind and we can’t wait to bring them to Australia later this year.”

The brand’s importer is bullish about its chances in the Australian market despite an increasingly heated field of competition from both new-age rivals out of China, and increasingly competitive offerings from established players.

It claims it won’t be aiming at the entry-point of the segment to rival MG, BYD, or GWM, and will instead aim higher, at rivals like the Tesla Model Y, Kia EV5 and Hyundai Ioniq 5. Clarke also said there’s still plenty of room for competition in the Australian market, as he expects EV growth to continue expanding until it reaches a saturation point, as has been seen in some Chinese cities.

In fact, Clarke agreed that Xpeng’s choice to partner with an importer in the Australian market at this time was to get ahead of other interested players, like Nio, which is in a similar part of the market and has already established a footprint in Europe.

Pricing for the G6 will be announced in September, with initial deliveries of the G6 to be made before the end of the year.
