Now that production of Porsche’s 918 Spyder has officially commenced, the Stuttgart carmaker has made the hybrid supercar’s array of options available to the public with a website helps us all dream up the ideal 918 -- even if it’s a no-go for Australian roads.

The 918’s optional Weissach aero and 38kg weight-saving package is already well known, along with two optional retro race paint schemes, but the 918 is available in 11 different colours (including three silvers), three different wheel choices, two grades of seat padding, seven interior colour schemes, and a suspension lift system to help with steep driveways.

Prospective buyers can also elect to collect their 918 from either Porsche’s Stuttgard headquarters or the 918’s Zuffenhausen factory, for the full ‘take the baby home from the hospital’ experience.

There’s no mention of pricing, but you can expect the 918 Spyder to adhere to the grand Porsche option tradition of pushing the supercar well beyond its  US$845,000 starting price. Remember, this is the brand that has perfected the art of charging more for less.

Sadly, all 918 Spyders set for production will be left-hand drive, so those considering it for Australian roads are left to marvel at its combination of a 652kW hybrid drivetrain, 0-100km/h acceleration of 2.8 seconds and a top speed of 345km/h, with a combined fuel figure of 3.3l/100km. Oh, and there’s also that 6:57 Nurburgring lap record announced last week

Back when all cars burned fuel and couldn't drive themselves, Mal was curing boredom by scanning every car his parents' VB Commodore drove past. His childhood appreciation for the car world exploded during a three-year stint in the US, and serious questions were asked when he spent a good chunk of his uni career perfecting lap times at Wakefield Park. Mal got his big break scooping the VE II Commodore, before a stint at Overlander magazine and kicking off his online career with The Motor Report in its heyday. These days he's exactly the same height as Michael Schumacher and uses his powers for good at the helm of CarsGuide's editorial team. Mal proudly shuns brand allegiance and counts three young kids, an EH Holden, NA MX-5, KE20 Corolla, W116 Mercedes-Benz and the world's most versatile Toyota Echo among his personal stable. He also craves a Subaru Vortex, so get in touch if you know where to find one.
