A new arrow in Chery’s expanding quiver of sub-brand models has appeared in China.

The Chery Tiggo 7 Sport was snapped at a dealer ahead of its official launch in September, according to CarNewsChina which shared the images.

Unlike other Tiggo products which have a conventional SUV-like look, the Tiggo 7 Sport is a more coupe-like design, not unlike the Range Rover Evoque. This is especially notable as Chery is JLR’s joint venture partner in China.

We’ll stop short of calling it a total copy as the Land Wind X7 was but there are certainly very close elements, including the wide, high-set grille, side air intakes, front bumper lower garnish. It even references the Land Rover Defender with its clip-on exterior storage.

It is also vastly different to any other Tiggo-branded product, looking instead to be based on the Jaecoo J7, also known as the Chery Tansuo 06 in China. The J7 is going to launch in Australia next year.

The report suggests that, while the J7 is pitched at outdoorsy customers, the Tiggo 7 Sport is more urban biased. Both would be considered ‘Medium SUVs’ in Australia, competing against fierce rivals such as the Toyota RAV4, Nissan X-Trail and Hyundai Tucson

Images of the interior show further similarities to the Jaecoo J7 with a floating driver’s display and huge multimedia touchscreen. It also has the distinctive HVAC control panel.

Further details of the powertrain and other specs remain a mystery. It is expected to use the same 1.6-litre turbo-petrol based plug-in hybrid system as the J7 which develops 145kW and 290Nm. A seven-speed wet-type dual-clutch automatic is used to drive all four wheels.

Chery’s Australian expansion is in full swing, with the Omoda E5 to launch next month and the cut-price Tiggo 4 set to follow. Premium brand Jaecoo is readying for a launch in 2025 with the J7 to be followed by a larger J8 SUV.
