Sedans are staging a comeback in the electric age.
Sure the Tesla Model Y and new breed of mid-size electric SUVs from China will likely be more popular, but sleeker styling and lower rooflines have huge advantages for aerodynamics and weight. Therefore, you get more range.
Swedish brand Volvo is stepping back into the luxury sedan wing with the ES90, a rival for the Mercedes-Benz EQE, BMW i5, Tesla Model S and forthcoming Audi (what).
Volvo has provided the first official glimpse at the ES90 ahead of its March 5 reveal. We can see a three-box design with a long bonnet and some choice pieces of intricate metalwork reminiscent of the EX90.
At the back, it’s not a traditional sedan. Rather, like the Polestar 2, the ES90 appears to have an elongated C-Pillar and short rear deck. This may be for aerodynamics and may point to a hatchback, rather than old-school boot, for improved practicality.
A pod on the roof is presumably hiding LIDAR sensors for autonomous driving and driver-assistance safety systems.

The ES90 will use the same SPA2 platform as found in the EX90 and the Polestar 3 large SUVs. Inside there’s a new "Superset tech stack", with Volvo claiming its new car is ‘software-defined’ with over-the-air updates.
Given the similarity of the electric architecture, software-based updates for the EX90 and ES90 should be able to be shared.
Volvo is yet to reveal details about the ES90’s battery and motors. Given its similarity to the EX90, it’s like the sedan will have a maximum battery capacity of 111kWh and rapid charge at up to 250kW (DC) for a 10-80 percent rejuvenation in 30 minutes.

Given the ES90’s sleeker shape, WLTP-rated driving range could be boosted to 700km and beyond, after the EX90’s 614km peak rating.
The EX90 is available in Single (205kW) or Twin Motor (300kW-380kW) versions — expect similar for the ES90. Air suspension is also likely for the sedan.
With Volvo recently reviving the Cross Country moniker on the EX30, we’d love to see an ES90 wagon with the rugged treatment in the future.

Expect Australia pricing to start somewhere in the region of $130,000 for the ES90, with first examples slated to arrive in late 2025.
