A luxe new EV contender has had a big boost before landing in Australia.
XPeng has detailed its upgraded G9 electric SUV, which has previously been confirmed to arrive Down Under this year.
The G9 is a larger version of the G6, which is now on sale in Australia, and is pitched at the BMW X5 and Range Rover Sport.
The updated G9 gets more power and driving range compared to the current version.
Two battery options are available: the 79kWh power source is available in rear- or all-wheel-drive layouts and the 93kWh version is all-wheel drive only.
The rear-wheel-drive version comes with a 258kW/465Nm electric motor and the all-wheel drive adds a front-mounted motor pushing combined outputs to 423kW and 695Nm.
Driving range for the rear-wheel drive is 680km, which drops to 625km for the all-wheel drive fitted with the smaller battery. The big battery variant can drive up to 725km between top ups. These driving ranges are assessed by the more lenient China Light-duty vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC), which is usually about 20 per cent more than the benchmark WLTP test cycle.

The G9 gets sophisticated double wishbone suspension upfront and multi-link suspension on the rear, which means it should be able to smooth out rough roads.
There are a mass of screens inside including a 10.25 display for the driver's instruments and dual circa-15-inch screens for the multimedia and in-car functions. The second of the dual screens is in front of the passenger seat and appears to come with plenty of apps for entertainment.
The G9 is one of three XPeng vehicles slated to arrive in Australia soon to join the G6 mid-size electric SUV. The others are the X9 people mover and cut-price Mona 03 small car.
There is no indication on price for the G9 in Australia but it is likely to start around the $70,000 range to provide some breathing room with the smaller G6 that starts at $54,800.
