Ford's cheap thrills: new cut-price performance Mustang on the way

A cheaper, faster Mustang could be on the way, based on the EcoBoost (pictured)

Ford will launch a new version of its Mustang muscle car that will offer plenty of cheap thrills, saying an “entry-level performance” model is on the way.

Reports out of the USA claim Ford is already testing the new model, which is expected to be unveiled at the New York Motor Show next week.

Early indications suggest the new model will sit between the EcoBoost four-cylinder entry-level car and the full-fat V8, with the new performance trim making use of the smaller engine.

US outlet autoblog is reporting that the new model could pair the EcoBoost engine with the performance-focused extras that arrive with the Performance Package 2 on the Mustang GT, which would see magnetic-ride suspension,19-inch alloys, extra body stiffening and a new front spoiler. All Ford Mustangs in Australia arrive with a Performance Pack as standard, including a limited-slip differential and Brembo brakes.

While engine output specifics are yet to be confirmed, Ford is not expected to up the power from its 2.3-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, which is currently good for 224kW and 441Nm - it’s more than those numbers would be delivered in a stiffer, sportier package.

While the vehicle is yet to be confirmed for Australia, Ford here does have form in offering international performance upgrades to local product, and with the Mustang the brand's flagship muscle car, their hands would be expected to be in the air.

Andrew Chesterton should probably hate cars. From his hail-damaged Camira that looked like it had spent a hard life parked at the end of Tiger Woods' personal driving range, to the Nissan Pulsar Reebok that shook like it was possessed by a particularly mean-spirited demon every time he dared push past 40km/h, his personal car history isn't exactly littered with gold. But that seemingly endless procession of rust-savaged hate machines taught him something even more important; that cars are more than a collection of nuts, bolts and petrol. They're your ticket to freedom, a way to unlock incredible experiences, rolling invitations to incredible adventures. They have soul. And so, somehow, the car bug still bit. And it bit hard. When "Chesto" started his journalism career with News Ltd's Sunday and Daily Telegraph newspapers, he covered just about everything, from business to real estate, courts to crime, before settling into state political reporting at NSW Parliament House. But the automotive world's siren song soon sounded again, and he begged anyone who would listen for the opportunity to write about cars. Eventually they listened, and his career since has seen him filing car news, reviews and features for TopGear, Wheels, Motor and, of course, CarsGuide, as well as many, many others. More than a decade later, and the car bug is yet to relinquish its toothy grip. And if you ask Chesto, he thinks it never will.
