Ford has trademarked ‘Mach 4’ in the US, suggesting a four-door Mustang could be on the way.
According to US-based Car and Driver, Ford lodged the trademark earlier this week with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, the equivalent body to IP Australia.
It comes roughly six months after Automotive News reported Ford dealers in the US were shown renderings of an off-road and four-door Mustang coupe dubbed the Mach 4 at an exclusive conference headed by the brand's CEO Jim Farley.

Farley was also quoted by the same outlet as saying Ford could build a four-door model as long as it provided “all the performance and attitude as the original”.
Alternatively, the Mach 4 trademark could somehow pertain to the “off-road supercar” Ford is purportedly working on.

More recently, Farley was quoted in a Top Gear interview saying, “We’re in the middle of creating something, so we don’t have all the answers yet, but the question is should Ford make an off-road supercar? Not a version of a car, a standalone supercar.”
It comes as Ford backs away from electric vehicles in favour of more enthusiast-oriented product lines, such as the Mustang, Raptor, Maverick and Bronco.

Australia only receives the Mustang range and V6 Ranger Raptor of those four, with the Bronco earmarked as a potential entry following the commencement of Chinese production last year.
As with a future four-door Mach 4 Mustang, however, the Bronco’s entry into the Australian market remains up in the air for now.
