Hyundai isn’t set to go EV-only with its N performance division and a new strategy to keep internal-combustion engines could see them gain a hybrid boost.
As reported by Auto Express, this new strategy could see a series of hybrid N vehicles be offered alongside the electric Ioniq 5 N and Ioniq 6 N.
Hyundai vehicles that could be set to receive a high-performance hybrid powertrain include versions of the i20, i30, Kona and even the Tucson.
A new-generation version of the Tucson is on the horizon soon and it’s reportedly set to gain boxy, retro-inspired styling like the new Nexo hydrogen SUV.
The full-fat N version will likely get a more aggressive body kit and racy elements to emphasise its dynamic intentions.
It’ll reportedly be powered by a next-generation version of the 1.6-litre hybrid powertrain with an electric motor on the rear axle for all-wheel drive. A total system output could be more than 220kW.
“We’re not limiting ourselves to EVs,” said Hyundai N Management Group Vice President Joon Park to Auto Express.

“We will go further with the ICE-based cars as well; this is not the end of our journey.
“I cannot tell you exactly – but lighter, more agile, nimble, and exciting. These are the key elements that we are heading to.
“One thing I can tell you is that if we have hybrid systems, the characteristics of our hybrid systems will be different.

“We have two different strategies for our hybrid systems: one for efficiency and one for neutral efficiency.
“If we have a hybrid system in our N cars, the strategy will be different; to have more power intensely.
“If we can make a smaller model with a less-weighted battery, then it can be better.”
Adding to these comments, it appears a refreshed N line-up is also due locally, with the brand's local Director of Marketing and Product Andrew Tuitahi telling CarsGuide recently "There are successors to existing ICE (N) models that will retain an ICE powertrain, I just can't share too many details today.
"ICE or hybrid, or both. I can't confirm more today, but there will be a spectrum of small through medium (vehicles)." he said.
