Global sales figures for the world’s two largest automotive companies, Toyota and Volkswagen Group, are in for 2023 - and it’s the former that comes out clearly on top.

Toyota remained the world’s largest automaker for 2023 after a few years at the top, totalling a 10,307,395 result for 2023 up against the 9.24 million vehicles delivered by Volkswagen Group.

While Toyota’s figure includes its premium sibling brand Lexus, it excludes Daihatsu and Hino - if included the brand would have totalled 11,233,039 sales.

For Volkswagen, which was up 12 per cent on the previous year’s figure, the group broke down its sales to include a note that 8.3 per cent of its vehicles sold globally were electric, a rise by 21.1 per cent to ‘around’ 394,000 cars.

In Australia, it’s a different story in the battle between the brands.

While Volkswagen Group collectively saw a sales increase of more than 20,000 units in 2023 compared to 2022 (for a combined 2023 sales result of 74,605), Toyota was by far Australia’s highest selling group with 215,240 before taking Lexus into account (15,192).

Other manufacturers ahead of VW Group in Australia included Mazda (100,008 sales), Ford 87,800, Kia (76,120) and Hyundai (75,183).
