MG has kicked off its massive new-model rollout in Australia, confirming it will rip the covers from some crucial fresh metal at this weekend’s Melbourne Motor Show.
As well as the previously announced MG IM5 sedan and IM6 SUV, MG will show off the ZS EV-replacing MGS5 EV, the hybrid version of the HS medium SUV and the big new QS large seven-seat SUV.
The first cab off the rank will likely be the MGS5 EV in the first half of this year, although exact timing is yet to be locked in.
It will take the place of the affordable ZS EV that was one of the most popular electric cars in Australia. The most recent examples of the ZS EV had a runout price of $36,888, drive-away.
According to Chinese reports, the MGS5’s power comes from an electric motor mounted to the rear wheels producing 125kW/250Nm. This is paired with one of two lithium iron phosphate battery packs, available in 49.1kWh or 62.2kWh.
In China there are three different driving ranges - 425km, 515km and 525km under the less stringent CLTC standards - but it’s unclear what will make it to Australia.
The plug-less hybrid version of the popular HS mid-size family SUV will also land in the coming months before mid-year, while a plug-in hybrid version should land at around the same time.
The HS PHEV is expected to use a 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine and in the UK comes with a 24.7kWh battery for a competitive 120km of electric-only driving range (WLTP) and a four-hour charge time.
This will ensure it is competitive with the likes of the BYD Sealion 6, while offering greater range than the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV.
Arguably the biggest reveal will be the MG QS, a large seven-seat SUV that will finally give MG firepower against the likes of the Toyota Kluger, Hyundai Santa Fe and Kia Sorento.

This is expected to land sometime during winter this year.
Details of the QS were revealed in Australian homologation filings last month. It will be offered in two-wheel drive and all-wheel drive layouts, both powered by the same 2.0-litre, four-cylinder, turbo-petrol engine sending 153kW to a nine-speed automatic transmission.
It measures 4983mm long, 1967mm wide and 1778mm tall with a wheelbase of 2915mm, making it slightly larger than a Kluger in all dimensions except height, but larger across all dimensions than the Santa Fe and Sorento.

This next batch of new models follows a range refresh for its existing line-up that started last year. The Chinese giant has recently launched new versions of the MG3 light hatch, followed by the HS medium SUV and the ZS small SUV that landed earlier this year.
More details of the QS, HS hybrid and the MGS5 EV will be revealed close to their respective launches.
