Chinese automotive company BYD said it's "Australia's brand" now, as it plots a mass model rollout that will see a BYD product competing in every vehicle segment.

That's the word from Luke Todd, chairman of EV Direct, the company that imports BYD models to Australia. Mr Todd told CarsGuide that the Chinese auto giant its "the fastest growing brand in the country".

"I believe BYD is Australia's brand," Mr Todd said.

"We're the fastest growing brand in the country. We're the fastest growing network. We're doubling our physical presence around the country. It's very ambitious, and we're on target.

"Our customers are embracing our brand. So we are just loving this journey, because Australia is embracing our vehicles," he said.

BYD — which has previously said it aims to dethrone Toyota as Australia's best-selling brand — has set some ambitious sales targets for our market, essentially vowing to double sales year on year as new models come online.

The model line-up currently comprises six vehicles — the Dolphin, Atto 3, Seal, Shark 6, Sealion 6 and Sealion 7 — with a further two launches planned this year. A BYD sub-brand, Denza, will also be launching in Australia this year.

"Our goal is to double year on year. And if I look at last year, we actually did if you look at our orders, right? because we've been walking through the end of the year with 5000 to 6000 Shark 6 (orders)," EV Direct CEO, David Smitherman, told CarsGuide.

"So we would have achieved that. And this year, we are 100 percent on target to double it."

BYD finished the year with 20,458 sales in 2024, meaning it hopes to achieve in excess of 40,000 sales this year.

Andrew Chesterton should probably hate cars. From his hail-damaged Camira that looked like it had spent a hard life parked at the end of Tiger Woods' personal driving range, to the Nissan Pulsar Reebok that shook like it was possessed by a particularly mean-spirited demon every time he dared push past 40km/h, his personal car history isn't exactly littered with gold. But that seemingly endless procession of rust-savaged hate machines taught him something even more important; that cars are more than a collection of nuts, bolts and petrol. They're your ticket to freedom, a way to unlock incredible experiences, rolling invitations to incredible adventures. They have soul. And so, somehow, the car bug still bit. And it bit hard. When "Chesto" started his journalism career with News Ltd's Sunday and Daily Telegraph newspapers, he covered just about everything, from business to real estate, courts to crime, before settling into state political reporting at NSW Parliament House. But the automotive world's siren song soon sounded again, and he begged anyone who would listen for the opportunity to write about cars. Eventually they listened, and his career since has seen him filing car news, reviews and features for TopGear, Wheels, Motor and, of course, CarsGuide, as well as many, many others. More than a decade later, and the car bug is yet to relinquish its toothy grip. And if you ask Chesto, he thinks it never will.
