Fang Cheng Bao, a sub-brand of BYD, has revealed an important variant of a key model that’s of particular interest in Australia.
The sub-brand’s Fang Cheng Bao 5 will be called the Denza B5 when it comes to Australia next month. Denza is BYD’s premium sub-brand, and the model is a cut-price Prado rival.
But this week in China, the domestic equivalent has just gained a long-range plug-in hybrid variant with an electric driving range of 210km.
The Denza B5 shares its underpinnings with the runaway success that is the BYD Shark 6 ute.
The B5 already had a plug-in hybrid variant with a 100km WLTP range, which CarsGuide has test driven in China, but this new variant’s 210km range could be key to Australian success.
That figure comes from more lenient CLTC testing, which means its WLTP range could drop by a couple of dozen kilometres.
Chinese media reports the long-range version comes with updated tech under the surface, including an upgraded platform, driver assurance and powered-up user software.
Some of this will be available to owners of existing models as an over-the-air (OTA) update.
The Denza B5 already shown to Australian media in China this year has a combined output of 505kW/760Nm thanks to a turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and two electric motors, a claimed 1200km total range, 100kW DC fast-charging and a 0-100km/h sprint of 4.8 seconds.
Its biggest challenge will be proving its off-road chops when it lands here in Australia.
