Jeep has shown off its new electric large SUV, the Wagoneer S, that will become its first globally available electric car when it launches in the US joining the electric Jeep Avenger in Europe.
Touting 448kW and 837Nm, the large SUV is capable of getting from a standstill to 98km/h (60mph) in 3.4 seconds.
The Wagoneer S is promising in excess of 480km electric driving range from a 100kWh battery pack, making it a rival for the Kia EV9 and Tesla Model X.
It is based on the EV-specific 'STLA Large' platform and is therefore not related in any way to the Grand Cherokee. The new underpinnings mean the Wagoneer S is 35 per cent more torsionally rigid than the Grand Cherokee.
Measuring 4.89 metres long and 1.9 metres wide, the Wagoneer S is firmly a large SUV. Its off-road credentials are not stellar, despite twin-motor AWD it only has 163mm ground clearance.
Despite 400-volt architecture (not 800) Jeep claims the Wagoneer S can recuperate 20-80 per cent charge in 23 minutes on a suitably fast pylon – that’s on par with Kia’s EV9.

It may be sleek and futuristic outside but retains hallmark Jeep design cues, including the seven-slat detail in the front ‘grille’ that can now be illuminated. Thanks to laid back glass and sleek metal, the Wagoneer S has a drag coefficient of 0.29 Cd.
That makes it the most aerodynamic Jeep ever and the brand claims it is about 15 per cent better than the average large SUV.
Inside, there is a 12.3-inch centre display and digital instruments with an optional passenger screen. Electronic door releases and leather upholstery are standard with a 19-speaker sound system optional.

The Wagoneer S is to be made in Mexico and start at US$71,995. That’s equivalent to A$110K, though given the Grand Cherokee PHEV’s $111,450 price here, expect the Wagoneer S to be dearer again.
That said, Australian plans for the new electric SUV from Jeep are yet to be confirmed.
