Pricing and specs for Volkswagen's “electric Kombi” – the I.D Buzz – are finally here.

Volkswagen Australia said vehicles are rolling off the assembly line in Germany as we speak, with the ID. Buzz expected to go on sale in Australia before Christmas.

It will be available in two guises, the three-seater ID. Buzz Cargo priced at $79,990 (before on-roads), and the five-seater ID. Buzz Pro People Mover, starting at $87,990 (before on-roads).

This price slips under the Luxury Car Tax threshold, which also makes it eligible for the Fringe Benefits Tax exemption via a novated lease that should translate into decent sales.

The ID. Buzz People mover will be available in two further variations, a seven-seater long wheel base, and the seven-seater GTX long wheelbase 4MOTION.

Variant

Pricing (before on-road costs)

Cargo SWB RWD

$79,990

Pro SWB RWD

$87,990

Pro LWB RWD

$91,290

GTX LWB 4MOTION

$109,990

All models will come standard in rear-wheel drive, with the exception of the top-spec GTX which will be offered in all-wheel drive. You’ll have to wait a little longer for full-specs on the GTX though, as it is not expected to arrive in Australia until early 2025.

As standard, rear-wheel drive versions of the ID. Buzz will come with a 84kWh lithium-ion high voltage battery. Australian driving range hasn't been confirmed but in the UK in can travel up to 474km on a single charge.

The all-wheel drive GTX will carry dual-motors, with range likely to dip slightly, though a full-submission of the ID. Buzz’s range to Australian authorities is yet to be finalised. Fast charging across the range will allow for a recharge from 10 per cent to 80 per cent in 26 minutes.

Single motor versions make 210kW and 560Nm delivered to the rear wheels, with an electronically limited top-speed of 160km/h and a towing capacity of 1000kg. The dual motor, all-wheel drive GTX steps it up to 250kW and boosts towing capacity to 1600kg.

In terms of design, the ID. Buzz is a modern rendition of Volkswagen's iconic Kombi van. VW's target audience has changed with the ID. Buzz, which is far more family friendly with its five- and seven-seat configurations.

Trendy fleet managers will also appreciate the space for two European sized pallets in the three-seater Cargo spec.

Inside, the ID.Buzz’s 12.9-inch touch screen, which comes standard across the range, acts very much as the vehicle’s centrepiece. All of the vehicle’s media, navigation and climate controls are operated through it, with the additional choice of Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. It is accompanied by a 10-inch digital driver's display.

The base model Cargo three-seater comes standard with 18-inch steel wheels, power adjustable folding and heated mirrors, a heat reflecting windshield, 18-inch disc brakes with a pad-wear indicator, 13-inch rear drum brakes with an electric parking brake, front and rear shock absorption, and a 2-seater front passenger bench seat.

The ID Pro SWB builds on those features, gaining 18-inch diamond-turned alloy wheels, 18-inch disc brakes, 11-inch drum brakes, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, electronic sliding doors, carpet velour flooring, a nine-speaker entertainment system, and the configurable ID Box centre storage compartment which can be moved to different mounting points throughout the vehicle.

The LWB version shares the same features with the exception of bigger 19-inch diamond-turned alloy wheels, 19-inch disc brakes and 13-inch drum brakes.

Standard safety features include automatic emergency braking assist with pedestrian and cyclist monitoring, adaptive cruise control, lane changing assist, LED headlights and rear combination lamps, a multi-function exterior camera and a rear view mirror camera system.

The Cargo comes standard in Solid White, with the option of five metallic colours and two additional pearlescent colours for $1890.

The ID Pro adds four two-tone metallic paint options for $4090, along with the option of an entertainment package that includes Harman Kardon speakers with a head-up display for $2200, as well as a panoramic sunroof with smart glass for $3290.

Customers of the ID Pro can also opt in for two interior packages that are priced at either $6470 or $6970. Both include a luggage area load platform, dark tinted windows and seat heaters with individual controls. The standard package features upholstery made entirely of recycled materials, while the premium package carries VW’s synthetic suede upholstery.

Volkswagen is gearing up for the ID. Buzz to be a hit, with more than 7000 expressions of interest already.
