BYD has announced improved terms for its new-car warranty in Australia.

All vehicle components in electric (EV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) BYD cars sold by the brand’s local distributor, EVDirect, will now be covered by a six-year/150,000km warranty.

Previously, the infotainment screen and shock absorbers were only covered by a three-year/60,000km warranty.

Additionally, the drive units of all BYD cars are now covered by an eight-year/160,000km warranty, bringing it into line with the same warranty afforded to the battery pack with an increase of 10,000km.

The updated warranty will be backdated to 2022 when the brand’s first model – the Atto 3 – went on sale in Australia, meaning all owners will benefit from the improved terms.

CEO of EVDirect, David Smitherman, said the move was made in response to growing interest in the brand after it sold a record 4811 cars last month.

“BYD’s advanced technology continues to attract attention from both consumers and the wider industry. The blade battery represents safety and performance, and we’re thrilled to back the vehicles with an enhanced consumer warranty” said Smitherman.

Despite the improvement, BYD’s new-car warranty remains inferior to rival Chinese brand MG. It offers a 10-year/250,000km warranty on all of its cars, which currently include petrol, diesel, hybrid and electric powertrains.

Nissan currently offers the best warranty in the country at 10-years/300,000km, although it doesn’t currently offer a PHEV or an EV, aside from the outgoing Nissan Leaf, which is currently in run-out sale.
