The ultimate bang for buck? MG4 XPOWER electric hot hatch priced in Australia, delivering bonkers performance and super sharp pricing

The MG4 XPOWER flagship will arrive priced from $59,990.

The MG4 XPOWER flagship will arrive priced from $59,990, giving the Chinese brand what just might be the ultimate EV performance bargain in our market.

That cost undercuts rivals like the Kia EV6 GT ($99,590), the dual-motor Tesla Model 3 ($71,900) and the Polestar 2 dual-motor Performance ($79,272).

The MG4 XPOWER gets twin electric motors (unlocking all-wheel drive), which produce a combined 320kW and 600Nm — 150kW at the front, and 170kW at the rear.

That’s plenty of power. And enough to unlock a sprint to 100km/h of 3.8 seconds —  or what MG describes as “supercar performance”.

“The MG4 XPOWER has supercar performance packed with features including launch control and a track mode inspired lap timer showing that a compact EV can be affordable, practical and spirited to drive,” says MG Motor Australia and New Zealand CEO, Peter Ciao.

“We expect it will appeal to customers looking for a true performance car with plenty of technology and space to match.

“The MG4 XPOWER EV also retains the generous safety equipment levels, as well as practical hatchback features, of the award-winning MG4 range.”

The brand is promising some significant performance upgrades, too. That starts with Dynamic Cornering Control System that debuts here, and delivers a locking e-diff and torque vectoring to for more mid-corner traction.

There’s also a ride and handling upgrade, with retuned suspension, stiffer anti-roll bars and sharper steering, all of which increase the vehicle’s overall stiffness by 25 percent.

Finally, there’s been a brake and tyre upgrade, with ventilated 345mm discs in each corner, and Bridgestone Turanza rubber.

The MG4 XPOWER is fitted with a 64kWh battery set up for 140kW DC charging, meaning it can go from 10 to 80 percent charged in less than 30 minutes. All up, you can expect a 385km WLTP driving range.

Pre-orders for the MG4 XPOWER open tomorrow.

Andrew Chesterton should probably hate cars. From his hail-damaged Camira that looked like it had spent a hard life parked at the end of Tiger Woods' personal driving range, to the Nissan Pulsar Reebok that shook like it was possessed by a particularly mean-spirited demon every time he dared push past 40km/h, his personal car history isn't exactly littered with gold. But that seemingly endless procession of rust-savaged hate machines taught him something even more important; that cars are more than a collection of nuts, bolts and petrol. They're your ticket to freedom, a way to unlock incredible experiences, rolling invitations to incredible adventures. They have soul. And so, somehow, the car bug still bit. And it bit hard. When "Chesto" started his journalism career with News Ltd's Sunday and Daily Telegraph newspapers, he covered just about everything, from business to real estate, courts to crime, before settling into state political reporting at NSW Parliament House. But the automotive world's siren song soon sounded again, and he begged anyone who would listen for the opportunity to write about cars. Eventually they listened, and his career since has seen him filing car news, reviews and features for TopGear, Wheels, Motor and, of course, CarsGuide, as well as many, many others. More than a decade later, and the car bug is yet to relinquish its toothy grip. And if you ask Chesto, he thinks it never will.
