Just days after BYD's local division announced a new entry-level Atto 3 Essential grade, the brand has previewed a redesigned model in its home market.

Revealed in homologation filings submitted for approval with China’s official vehicle regulator, the accompanying images – published by CarNewsChina – show some modest design and tech upgrades.

Starting at the front, there is a new bumper with a much larger lower air intake. The black plastic panels where the fog lights would typically be have also been replaced by body-coloured ones.

In China the lower bumper can be customised with orange and green accents, though it's unclear whether we will see this option in Australia.

There is also a new camera positioned in the centre of the bumper area, suggesting BYD may have taken a leaf out of Tesla’s book in incorporating more camera technology to enhance its ADAS capabilities.

The Atto 3 already carries a five-star ANCAP safety rating with safety features like adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, blind-spot detection and rear-cross-traffic alert coming standard.

At the rear, the theme is very much the same with a larger chrome-effect bumper and body-coloured panelling.

There is a new split brake light design as well, which consists of two new light strips opposed to the single light bar on the previous design. There also appears to be new rear LED light signatures, although CarNewsChina hasn't confirmed this.

Newly designed five-spoke 18-inch alloys replace the current model’s pinwheel design.

Along the side of the vehicle there is a new silver strip that runs above the passenger windows, while the black plastic panel on the C-pillar has also been replaced by a body-coloured one.

No changes have been made to the Atto 3’s powertrain, which consists of a 50.1kWh lithium-ion-phosphate battery back on the new bottom-spec Essential grade, or the larger 60.4kWh unit on the top-spec Premium.

CarNewsChina expects the updated model to be released in China in the second quarter of this year. CarsGuide has contacted BYD’s local distributor to determine when it will land in Australia.
