The 2.0 TFSI comes with a big power bump from the new engine, but a new seven-speed wet clutch S-tronic transmission and a few more gadgets.

You can get it in all three bodystyles, starting at $45,900 for the Sportback, $47,500 for the sedan and $55,000 in the Cabriolet, about $6000 more than the 1.4.

Over and above the 1.4 specification, you get sports front seats, Apple Carplay/Android Auto, different 17-inch alloys, drive select, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, upgraded leather upholstery and aluminium door sill trims.

The 2.0 litre has a lot more power, with 140kW and 320Nm driving the front wheels, chopping 1.4 seconds out of the 1.4's 0-100km/h time, coming in at under seven seconds (convertible is 7.2 seconds). Consumption is up almost 20 percent, however.

The next step up in the A3 range is the all-wheel drive 2.0 TFSI Quattro.

Peter grew up in a house in Western Sydney where automotive passion extended to white Sigmas and Magnas. At school he discovered "those" magazines that weren't to be found in the house. Magazines that offered him the chance to sit in the driver's seat of cars he’d never even heard of let alone seen. His path to rebellion was set - he would love cars, know cars and want to write about cars, much to his family’s disgust. They wanted him to be a teacher. He bought a series of terrible cars and lusted after Ford Escort Cosworths, the Alfa Romeo 164 Q and occasionally kicked himself for selling his 1977 Alfa GTV. From 1.0-litre three cylinders to roaring V12s, Peter has driven them all and can't wait to tell you all about it.
