The Mazda 6 shrinks the gap between mainstream and premium, especially when equipped with its big and turbocharged petrol engine. But how will it fare on family duties for the weekend?

Mid-size sedans aren't at the top of many shopping lists these days, but if any car can change that, it's the Mazda 6 GT.

Kicking off the 6 range is the entry-level Sport, available in both sedan and wagon form.

It’s a case of evolution over revolution for the updated Mazda6 range. Lucky, then, that’s all Mazda’s flagship model required.

Third in the four-car 6 range is the GT, priced from $43,990 to $46,390. The 2.5-litre petrol picks up a turbo, with power jumping to 170kW and torque soaring to 420Nm. The 2.2-litre twin-turbo diesel stays, with its 140kW and  450Nm.The price jump brings 19-inch alloys, active LED headlights, black or white leather seats, power heated and folding mirrors, power windows, electric seats, 11 Bose-branded speakers, auto headlights and wipers, dual-zone climate control, leather steering wheel and gear shifter, sat nav, keyless entry and start, active cruise control, adaptive front lighting, front and rear parking sensors, heated front and rear seats and a space-saver spare.Mazda's reputation for loading up with safety gear remains undimmed with the new 6 - it has six airbags, ABS, stability and traction controls, high beam control, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring, radar cruise control, forward and reversing AEB, reverse-cross traffic alert, reversing camera and traffic sign recognition.Mazda's MZD Connect touchscreen handles the media (including DAB radio) and sat nav duties on an 8.0-inch touchscreen with rotary dial control. 

As before, the Atenza tops the 6 range, and it will cost you between $47,690 and $50,090. The Atenza is available in both sedan and wagon, and with the  170kW/420Nm turbo petrol or 140kW/450Nm twin-turbo diesel.The Atenza sports 19-inch alloys, adaptive LED headlights, white or walnut Nappa leather seats with suede inserts, wood trim, power heated and folding mirrors, power windows, electric seats, 11 Bose-branded speakers, auto headlights and wipers, dual-zone climate control, leather steering wheel and gear shifter, sat nav, keyless entry and start, head up display, active cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, around-view camera and a space-saver spare.Mazda's reputation for loading up with safety gear remains undimmed with the new 6. Second in the range is the 6 Touring, which adds the option of the 2.2-litre twin-turbo diesel engine. As with the Sport, you have a choice of sedan or wagon body styles. It's priced from $36,690 to $40,990, with those down by around $500 on the outgoing model.It's a big financial step up, but for your extra money you'll get 17-inch alloys, LED headlights, leather seats, power heated and folding mirrors, power windows, electric seats, 11 Bose-branded speakers, auto headlights and wipers, dual-zone climate control, a leather steering wheel and gear shifter, sat nav, keyless entry and start, active cruise control and front and rear parking sensors.Mazda's reputation for loading up with safety gear remains undimmed with the new 6. First out of the blocks is the 2.5-litre petrol-only Sport, starting at $29,700 for the sedan and $30,900 for the wagon.
