When you think of the US cop cars, the first thing that comes to mind are large V8 sedans that are at least a decade past their production use by date.

Dodge Chargers and Ford Crown Vics are probably the ones we know best, but it looks like times could be changing.

The Fremont (California) Five-O now have a Tesla Model S, of all things for use as a patrol car.

It was actually purchased at the beginning of last year to replace an aging '07 Dodge Charger, the 2014 Model S (yes, four years old) still cost the equivalent of $85k Australian.

Does it take 12 months to fit lights and sirens, a push bar for ramming baddies off the road, and ballistic barriers? Apparently so.

With the 85-kWh battery, the Tesla will accelerate from 0-100km/h in 3.2 seconds and has a range rating of over 500km, so no crooks should be able to outrun the law.

It's not the first Tesla police car either, with the LAPD and Denver PD also running Model S sqaud cars. Over in Basel, Switzerland, the police force run a handful of Model Xs.

Should Aussie cops use Teslas? Let us know in the comments.

Following a passion shared by his father and grandfather, Mitchell’s love of cars really kicked off with his Godfather’s purchase of a new Mazda RX-8. Exposure to that car changed his world forever, leading to an RX-7 obsession. To feed his automotive addiction, Mitchell decided to become a motoring journalist and made his mark at several high-profile motoring publications before landing at CarsGuide. While he is a rotary loyalist, Mitchell also has a massive love for Aussie muscle cars, and dreams of one day getting behind the wheel of a Charger R/T E49 (if anyone will let him). His other passions include Queensland, and spending Saturdays with the boys.
