Subaru Brumby 1980 FAQs

Small ute options in Australia?

Sadly, the Jumbuck has gone the same way as the Subaru Brumby — the world now wants bigger utes. In any case, the Jumbuck was based on the old Mitsubishi Lancer, which meant it was barely safe, and Proton has insufficient funds to develop a new model.

Proton Jumbuck ute alternative

The short answer is no-one. Subaru was first with a half-tonne ute in its Brumby, which I owned and loved. But it has no plans for a replacement and neither does Proton, as all utes are now one-tonne and bigger. Hyundai revealed a ute based on the ix35 compact SUV at Detroit, but any production version is still a couple of years away.

Checking out a brumby

THE Brumby is a good choice provided it is in good condition. They were a tough little truck, too tough for their own good, really, because some uncaring owners pushed them beyond reasonable limits in the belief they couldn't be broken. Look for underbody damage that would indicate a rough life off-road, and check drivelines carefully, particularly looking for damaged or split driveshaft rubber boots. They damage relatively easily and if not found and fixed quickly can lead to further damage to the driveshaft joints from mud and dirt.
