New variants of the Mitsubishi Triton have appeared in pricing data ahead of the official announcement of an expansion to the popular ute range later this year.

Since the launch of the new-generation Triton, Mitsubishi has promised deleted cab-chassis variants would return, alongside a single six-speed manual gearbox 4x4 version.

All upcoming cab chassis versions are 4x4s retaining the ute’s new-generation 2.4-litre turbo-diesel engine, and it comes in a variety of trim levels, from the a basic GLX Manual to the top-spec GSR.

Prices range from $47,240 for the GLX Manual, while the GSR is priced from $51,540. See the table below for the full range of price tags.

It will add to the existing list of automatic-only ute variants, which kicks off from the most basic GLX 4x2 ($43,690, before on-roads) and tops out at $63,840 for the GSR Special Edition.

Mitsubishi Motors Australia has been contacted for comment on the cab chassis pricing. Expect full specification at a later date. For now, according to RedBook data, we can see the cab chassis versions are each available in an array of grade-dependent colours, with front-cross traffic alert continuing as a dealer fit option. Additionally, the cab chassis has a 1210kg payload and maintains the Triton’s 3500kg braked trailer towing capacity.

It marks a long-awaited expansion of the Triton range, although more body styles are available overseas, notably single-cab and low-rider versions available in Thailand where the Triton is built.

While low-riders seem unlikely for the Australian market, single cab versions are also already available just over the Tasman in New Zealand, available in either 2WD or 4x4 versions only in a base GLX trim.

Currently the ute-based single cab market is contested by the Ford Ranger, Isuzu D-Max, Mazda BT-50, Nissan Navara and Toyota HiLux leaving it a space uncontested by low-cost Chinese rivals.

The Triton range remains exclusively powered by a 2.4-litre four-cylinder 150kW/470Nm twin-turbo diesel engine, with no hybrid drivetrain options in sight. The new-generation ute is yet to be joined by a Pajero Sport SUV spin-off, with the outgoing previous-generation Pajero Sport having already ended production. It would not be able to continue being sold in Australia thanks to increasingly strict Australian Design Rule (ADR) requirements which necessitate a higher-grade auto emergency braking suite be fitted to all new vehicles sold.

This requirement has also resulted in the discontinuation of other popular models from Mitsubishi’s ageing range, including the ASX and Eclipse Cross small SUVs. The ASX will be replaced by a Renault Captur based model later this year, while it seems likely a revived ‘Grandis’ people mover will replace the Eclipse Cross, complete with hybrid drivetrain options.

Mitsubishi’s Triton 4x4 range had a strong 2024 thanks to the release of the new-generation version. By the end of the year it finished up 7.3 per cent, moving 14,737 units. It outsold all its Chinese rivals while also finishing ahead of the Nissan Navara and Mazda BT-50. It has a way to go to challenge the segment leaders, including the Ford Ranger, Toyota HiLux, and Isuzu D-Max.

The brand will face further challenges maintaining its hard-fought position in our market going forward, as Chinese automakers like BYD and GWM ramp up their hybrid offerings in the ute space in Australia.
