Chery is serving up hybrid power on a budget.
The Chinese brand has announced prices and specifications for its new Tiggo 4 Hybrid small SUV.
It is available in two grades starting with the $29,990 drive-away for the Urban variant and $34,990 drive-away, which $6000 and $8000 more than the equivalent petrol-powered Tiggo 4.
Despite the steep premium for petrol-electric power it is still the most affordable new hybrid SUV on sale in Australia, undercutting the $32,990 drive-away MG ZS Hybrid and the circa-$35,000 Toyota Yaris Cross Hybrid.
Chery Australia Chief Operating Officer Lucas Harris said the Tiggo 4 Hybrid offers unbeatable value.
“Introducing hybrid power to the Tiggo 4 range was a no-brainer. Customers want more for less and we aim to meet these demands with all our products,” said Harris.
Power comes from a 71kW/120Nm 1.5-litre petrol engine and a 150kW/310Nm electric motor, but Chery doesn't quote combined output figures.
This is paired to a single-speed hybrid transmission that drives the front wheels.
Chery claims it drinks 5.4L/100km, and can run on cheaper 91 RON regular unleaded petrol.
The base Urban comes with 17-inch alloy wheels, LED daytime running lights (DRLs), a 10.25-inch multimedia screen that is compatible with wired Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto. There is also a 10.25-inch digital driver display and dual zone air conditioning.

Chery has fitted the Tiggo 4 Hybrid with a wide array of active driver aids and safety tech and seven airbags.
The Ultimate grade adds synthetic leather seats that are heated in the front row, a sunroof, ambient interior lighting, wireless device charger and it ditches the four-speaker stereo in the Urban for a six-speaker unit.
All Cherys are covered by a seven-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty and a capped-price servicing program.
