Cheaper petrol Tank! 2023 GWM Tank 300 petrol variants join hybrids as new entry-level engine option, makes Jeep Wrangler look pricey

The Tank 300 hybrid launched early this year, but now a non-hybrid has arrived.

If something like a Jeep Wrangler and Land Rover Discovery Sport is your kind of SUV, but their prices are a bit much, GWM’s off-road brand Tank has something you might be interested in.

The 2023 GWM Tank 300 launched with a hybrid variant earlier this year, but the brand is now bringing a non-hybrid petrol version to the Australian market with a starting price of $46,990 drive-away, $9000 cheaper than the hybrid.

That’s for the entry Lux variant, which comes with a 162kW/380Nm 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder engine, mated to an 8-speed auto transferring power to a part-time 4x4 system.

It has LED headlights, 17-inch wheels, synthetic leather seating, a 12.3-inch multimedia screen and same-sized instrument display, a nine-speaker sound system, a sunroof, a host of safety features and a 360-degree surround-view parking camera all as standard.

For reference, the entry Jeep Wrangler costs $81,450 before on-road costs.

The higher specification of the two petrol Tank 300s is the Ultra, with a $50,990 drive-away price and extras like 18-inch alloys, real Nappa leather-accented trim, heated and cooled front seats with a power-adjustable driver's seat and lumbar massage, ambient lighting, a wireless phone charging and a front diff-lock.

It also comes with a 220V power outlet for outdoor adventuring.

Official fuel economy for the petrol is a claimed 9.5 litres per 100km. For reference, the hybrid version comes with a claimed 8.4L/100km, so it’s clear there’s not a huge emphasis on saving fuel in the latter.

The safety suite across both variants features autonomous emergency braking (AEB) and forward collision warning, as well as lane departure warning and assist, emergency lane-keep, adaptive cruise control, rear-cross traffic alert and braking, plus sign recognition and parking sensors front and rear.

The hybrid variant was awarded a maximum five-star rating by the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP), so the petrol version’s rating would likely be similar.

It comes with a seven-year/unlimited kilometre warranty and five years of roadside assistance and capped-price servicing.
