Has Toyota built a 2024 RAV4 Rugged? 'Adventure Offroad package II' toughens up top-selling Hyundai Tucson, Mazda CX-5 and Mitsubishi Outlander mid-size SUV rival

The ‘special edition' treatment is available on the Japanese Adventure variant

If you like the idea of Toyota’s flagship RAV4 Edge grade, but would love some specialised additions to toughen it up for off-road adventure, a new edition just released in Japan could be the answer to your 4WDing prayers.

At least it would be if the RAV4 Adventure Offroad package II wasn’t a domestic market-only offering, with Toyota Australia stating on the record that it currently has no plans to offer the car here. But, you never know…

The new ‘special edition' treatment is available on the Japanese Adventure variant, close to the Aussie Edge spec, and is similarly available in 2.0-litre petrol pure-combustion as well as 2.5L petrol-electric hybrid form, both AWD.

Externally, the Adventure Offroad is distinguished by ‘Gori Gori Black’ crackle finish applied to the front bumper, exterior mirrors and tailgate trim as well as an optional front and rear skid plate set.

High-rise “bridge type” roof rails are also finished in black and under the skin the suspension has been lifted 10mm.

More rough-terrain friendly 18-inch alloy wheels (down from 19-inch) are ‘Matte Black’ and LED fog lights, able to switch between white and yellow, are an individual option.

Colour choices include white, grey and black whole body shades plus a pair of two-tone treatments - a ‘Black Mica’ roof over either ‘Urban Khaki’ (light green) or ‘Grayish Blue’.

Inside, a red and black colour scheme is applied to everything from contrast stitching on the dash and synthetic leather seats to surround trims for the storage tray and cupholders in the front centre console.

On a direct currency conversion the pure combustion version of the Adventure Offroad package II is priced just over $41K while the petrol-electric hybrid sits at around $48,000.

For reference the local petrol RAV4 Edge is $56,230, before on-road costs, with the hybrid at $58,630.

And if you’re keen to shoot for a local recreation of the Japanese ‘Offroad’ package a black nudge bar, anti-slip side steps and fabric seat covers as well as all-weather rubber floor and cargo mats for the RAV4 are listed in the Toyota Australia accessories catalogue.
