Honda boss: "We have a sports car." Is there a Honda NSX electric car monster being built in the brand's basement to take on Porsche, Ferrari and the Chevrolet Corvette?

A future NSX would sit at the top of the new fully electric Honda 0 Series above models like the Saloon concept shown here.

Honda’s NSX supercar looks ready to be reborn as a fully electric monster, according to hints given by the company’s CEO.

Speaking to UK publication Autocar Honda CEO Toshihiro Mibe said the brand is “researching sports cars in the EV era” and then dropped another tantalising detail with: “at the R&D centre we have a sports car.”

The cryptic comments came after Honda announced its new all-electric Honda 0 Series sub-brand at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.

Two concept models - the Saloon and Space-Hub - were revealed at CES showcasing the design of the brand’s EV future.

While no details about a possible future NSX were given, it would, of course, sit at the pinnacle of the Honda 0 Series range and share the large gaping rectangular ‘grille’ of the CES concepts and possibly even the cab-forward styling seen on the Saloon.

It’s difficult to think that the upcoming electric NSX and the Acura EV supercar won’t be closely related in their underpinnings.

The first-generation Honda NSX went on sale in 1990 as a mid-engined, rear-wheel-drive sports car with supercar performance, but with the reliability and affordability of a mainstream Japanese brand.

The name comes from: New Sportscar eXperimental.

Powered by a 3.0-litre petrol V6 the original NSX could sprint from 0-100km/h in less than six seconds.

The second-generation NSX arrived in 2017 with a V6 hybrid powertrain and styling that recalled the original. Here was a true supercar, but also with a supercar price of $420,000.

Just nine NSXs were sold between 2016 and 2020, prompting Honda to discontinue the model in Australia.

Initially expected to be a fully electric vehicle, the production version of the Prelude will feature a hybrid powertrain.

Honda has been on the front foot of revealing future models to the world in recent times.

The 2025 Honda Prelude was presented as a prototype at the 2023 Japan Mobility show but production has now been confirmed for the middle of this decade. Initially expected to be a fully electric vehicle, the production version of the Prelude will feature a hybrid powertrain.
