New dual-cab utes 2020 compared: How safe are 4x2 and 4x4 mid-size pick-ups?

The Toyota HiLux dual-cab pick-up is arguably the safest ute when it comes to advanced driver-assist systems.

Nissan gave its Navara ute an update last week, but crucially it was missing the overdue addition of autonomous emergency braking (AEB) and other crucial advanced-driver assist systems, which got us thinking about the level of safety dual-cab pick-ups currently offer.

Some (Toyota HiLux, Ford Ranger and Mitsubishi Triton) lead from the front not only in sales, but also safety, with comprehensive suites available.

Conversely, others (Mazda BT-50 and Volkswagen Amarok) are showing their age and have little to offer in the way of active features.

There’s also a couple of newcomers (LDV T60 and SsangYong Musso) that put their more established rivals to shame, even if just a little bit.

And with Isuzu and Great Wall introducing new-generation models (D-Max and Cannon respectively) around the middle of this year, the safety ante is likely to be upped again.

Note: The following table compares 4x2 and 4x4 mid-size dual-cab pick-ups only. And given their recent discontinuations, the Holden Colorado and Mercedes-Benz X-Class have been excluded here.

Justin’s dad chose to miss his birth because he wanted to watch Peter Brock hopefully win Bathurst, so it figures Justin grew up to have a car obsession, too – and don’t worry, his dad did turn up in time after some stern words from his mum. That said, despite loving cars and writing, Justin chose to pursue career paths that didn’t lend themselves to automotive journalism, before eventually ending up working as a computer technician. But that car itch just couldn’t be scratched by his chipped Volkswagen Golf R (Mk7), so he finally decided to give into the inevitable and study a Master of Journalism at the same time. And even with the long odds, Justin was lucky enough to land a full-time job as a motoring journalist soon after graduating and the rest, as they say, is history. These days, Justin happily finds himself working at CarsGuide during the biggest period of change yet for the automotive industry, which is perhaps the most exciting part of all. In case you’re wondering, Justin begrudgingly sold the Golf R (sans chip) and still has plans to buy his dream car, an E46 BMW M3 coupe (manual, of course), but he is in desperate need of a second car space – or maybe a third.
