BMW Australia has plugged the sizeable gap between base and flagship of what is likely to be its most popular model.

The 2025 BMW X3 30e xDrive plug-in hybrid sits between the X3 20 xDrive opener and in-line six-cylinder powered M50 xDrive flagship, with the PHEV priced from $102,500, before on-road costs.

BMW’s ‘G45’ generation becomes the second X3 offered with a plug-in hybrid powertrain and, rarely, walks pricing back compared to the vehicle it replaces, with the old xDrive30e starting at $111,800 before on-road costs – a $9300 drop.

The new price and uprated powertrain should aid BMW’s new medium SUV’s prospects against key rivals such as the Audi Q5, Lexus NX and Mercedes-Benz GLC.

Key details for the new plug-in hybrid are that it produces 220kW and 450Nm with a 0-100km/h sprint of 6.2 seconds and 215km/h top speed thanks to the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder and 135kW transmission-mounted electric motor.

Thanks to a 19.7kWh battery, the X3 is certified with 81-90km of electric-only (WLTP cycle) driving range, with its combined fuel consumption rating at 0.9-1.1L/100km which falls to 7.2-7.9L/100km with the battery discharged (all WLTP).

Efficiency is said to be improved by 50 per cent over its predecessor. There are several drive modes including 'Hybrid' and 'Electric' to balance the best fuel efficiency possible. Charging the battery from flat to full takes two hours and fifteen minutes at 11kW (AC).

The X3 30e xDrive comes in M Sport configuration as standard featuring 20-inch alloy wheels, tri-zone climate control, adaptive LED headlights, glowing kidney grille, keyless entry and start, adaptive dampers and a six-speaker sound system driven via a 14.9-inch touchscreen that has wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality.

That isn’t it, though, with leather upholstery on the seats and steering wheel, electrically adjustable seats with heating and ventilation, sun blinds, tinted rear windows, auto parking, wireless phone charging and a non-opening glass roof.

There are various packages available including the $4000 'Enhancement Pack' with metallic paint (normally $2000 on its own), an alarm system and uprated Harman Kardon stereo.

An M Sport Pro pack adds gloss black grille frame and tailpipe trims, shadow line headlights, red brake calipers and M tri-colour accented seat belts. A tow package is $2000 while the upmarket ‘Merino’ leather upholstery option is $4000.
