R rated! 2023 Honda Civic Type R price and specs reveal increased cost for Volkswagen Golf R and Toyota GR Corolla-rivalling hot hatch

Honda's new Civic Type R will land on Australian shores in February 2023.

Honda Australia has opened the order books for its hotly-anticipated 2023 Civic Type R hot hatch, confirming its February 2023 arrival and $72,600 drive-away price.

This makes the new-generation Civic Type R $25,400 pricier than the standard Civic VTi-LX that it shares a platform with, while also priced close to the Volkswagen Golf R ($65,990 before on-road costs) and Renault Megane RS Trophy ($62,300).

For reference, the previous-generation Civic Type R landed in Australia in 2017 with a $50,990 before on-road costs pricetag, rising to $54,990 with a MY2020 update and topping out at $70,000 drive-away for the Limited Edition swansong.

With a new-generation model however, power and torque outputs are bumped up to 235kW/420Nm from its 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine – an improvement of 7kW/20Nm from its predecessor.

Drive is once again sent exclusively to the front wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox with an automatic rev-matching function.

Aiding performance is a triple outlet active exhaust which, like in the old car, will adjust valves at certain RPMs to increase aural output.

Four driving modes are also on offer – Comfort, Sport, +R and Individual – which will tweak steering, suspension, engine and exhaust settings.

Wearing 19-inch wheels as standard shod in 265/30 Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres, Honda’s new Civic Type R also features a number of aerodynamic tweaks like a larger front bumper, massive rear wing and wider fenders to help it boogie around a racetrack even faster.

Standard equipment includes front sports bucket seats, suede-like seat trim, auto-folding side mirrors, a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster, acoustic windscreen, and interior ambient lighting.

Handling multimedia duties is a 9.0-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless smartphone charger, satellite navigation and Honda’s LogR data logger.

In terms of safety, the new Type R comes fitted with blind-spot monitoring, driver attention alert, speed limiter, traffic sign recognition and knee airbags for the front passengers.

Four exterior paint colours are available, including Rally Red, Crystal Black, Sonic Grey, and Honda’s signature Championship White.
