Toyota Supra 2020 #01 sells for $2.9m

How much is too much to pay for a first-run Toyota Supra? How does almost three million dollars sound?

That's the price a 2020 Toyota Supra fetched at a charity auction in the USA overnight, with the proceeds of the sale donated to the American Heart Association and military-focused charity the Bob Woodruff Foundation. The final bid? A cool US$2.1m.

And what did our lucky buyer get for their substantial investment? Well, pretty much what anybody who buys one of the 1500 Launch Edition versions of the Supra at its regular pricing (US$55,250) will be getting when they hit dealerships in the States.

There are two noticeable exceptions, of course. For a start, this auctioned version is painted in a one-off colour, a Phantom Matte grey, paired here with red mirror caps and black wheels. Perhaps more importantly, they've purchased the very first Supra, with a unique VIN than ends in 20201 - the last digit signifying that this is the first production vehicle to roll down the line. Which is why the car is nicknamed Global #1.

Oh, and Toyota boss Akio Toyoda has signed the engine, and even threw in his personal driving suit that he wore during the final stages of dynamic testing.

“We did the first production 2020 GR Supra justice tonight,” says Toyota Motor North America's executive vice-president of sales, Bob Carter. “When Toyota launches a vehicle of this caliber, you only get one chance to do it right – and this auction was the perfect setting. After 20 years, this marks the return of a legend."

The winning bidder also won a custom racing suit, VIP Nascar tickets and a hot lap experience at the Virginia race.

Fair price? Or fairly crazy? Tell us in the comments below.

Andrew Chesterton should probably hate cars. From his hail-damaged Camira that looked like it had spent a hard life parked at the end of Tiger Woods' personal driving range, to the Nissan Pulsar Reebok that shook like it was possessed by a particularly mean-spirited demon every time he dared push past 40km/h, his personal car history isn't exactly littered with gold. But that seemingly endless procession of rust-savaged hate machines taught him something even more important; that cars are more than a collection of nuts, bolts and petrol. They're your ticket to freedom, a way to unlock incredible experiences, rolling invitations to incredible adventures. They have soul. And so, somehow, the car bug still bit. And it bit hard. When "Chesto" started his journalism career with News Ltd's Sunday and Daily Telegraph newspapers, he covered just about everything, from business to real estate, courts to crime, before settling into state political reporting at NSW Parliament House. But the automotive world's siren song soon sounded again, and he begged anyone who would listen for the opportunity to write about cars. Eventually they listened, and his career since has seen him filing car news, reviews and features for TopGear, Wheels, Motor and, of course, CarsGuide, as well as many, many others. More than a decade later, and the car bug is yet to relinquish its toothy grip. And if you ask Chesto, he thinks it never will.
