Toyota’s luxury arm Lexus is preparing its newest road racer.
Spy pics published by Carscoops show the new Lexus LFR, which is believed to be the follow-up to the iconic Lexus LFA built more than a decade ago.
That car achieved cult status in the supercar realm when it was launched and the LFR is hoping to follow suit.
It is based on the Japanese company’s coming GT3 race car, which was shown in concept form earlier this year.
Details are scarce but it looks like a mean machine with a low slung silhouette, a long bonnet that no doubt houses some serious weaponry and wicked aero all over that culminates in an enormous rear wing.
Big black alloy wheels wrapped in low profile performance rubber are visible, too.

The road going version’s aero features are toned down compared to the race car concept.
Front air intakes and vents are smaller than the concept, as is the wing, and the third rear brake light is gone, too.
The spy pics of the heavily camouflaged car were taken at the legendary Nurburgring track and on public roads in Germany.

What’s underneath the bonnet is a mystery but it could be a tweaked version of the mooted twin-turbocharged V8 found in the GT3 race car concept.
Being a Lexus there is a big chance it could be a hybrid, too.
Top-end supercars are increasingly going to hybrid and plug-in hybrid power to reduce emissions and boost performance.

Ferrari has petrol-electric power in its 296 GTB, as does Lamborghini's Revuelto.
The rumoured LFR continues the Japanese giant’s run of top-notch performance cars.
Toyota’s expanding GR sports car range has landed hit after hit with its Supra, Yaris GR and Corolla GR performance cars.

The Japanese brand is also rumoured to be bringing back gems of the past in the form of the Celica and MR2.
These cars are expected to use the next-generation of Toyota engines under development right now.
These new inline four-cylinder turbocharged engines are being prepared to blend better with electric propulsion with the top-end version to be fitted into the Supra to make about 300kW.
