The 30 TFSI is the entry-point in the A1 range, and for the time being the cheapest car in Audi's entire line-up, wearing an MSRP of $32,350.

The 30 TFSI is equipped with a three-cylinder turbo engine producing 85kW/200Nm, mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. A manual version, available in Europe is ruled out for the Australian market. The 30 TFSI is rated to consume 5.4L/100km of 95RON fuel on the combined cycle.

Standard spec includes 16-inch alloy wheels, a 10.25-inch digital dashboard, an 8.8-inch multimedia touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, DAB+ digital radio, USB-C connectivity, front and rear parking sensors, reversing camera, cloth seat trim, leather steering wheel, air-conditioning and turn-key ignition.

The 30 TFSI can be had with the 'Technik package' ($3200) which includes sat-nav, built-in internet connectivity, Audi's full 'Virtual Cockpit' digital dashboard, an upgraded sound system and wireless Apple CarPlay.

Premium paints can be added from $490 to $990 and can be had with a black contrast roof ($890).

The new A1 has a 335-litre boot (VDA) that is 65 litres more than the previous A1. The A1 does not feature a spare wheel, instead using a space-saving inflator kit.

Safety features include auto emergency braking (AEB) lane keep assist (LKAS) with lane departure warning (LDW), six airbags and the expected stability and brake controls. The A1 range will launch with a maximum five-star ANCAP safety rating.

The A1 range is covered by a three-year, unlimited kilometre warranty and needs to be serviced once every 12 months or 15,000km, whichever comes first.

Service packs are available at point of purchase (and can be bundled in on finance) the service cost is $1480 for three years or $1990 for five.

Despite studying ancient history and law at university, it makes sense Tom ended up writing about cars, as he spent the majority of his waking hours finding ways to drive as many as possible. His fascination with automobiles was also accompanied by an affinity for technology growing up, and he is just as comfortable tinkering with gadgets as he is behind the wheel. His time at CarsGuide has given him a nose for industry news and developments at the forefront of car technology.
