The ND MX-5 has, in the last few years, added a GT RS variant to the top of the food chain, bringing performance-focused additions to the iconic sports car.

From $51,640 before on-road costs as a Roadster soft-top, or from $56,140 in retractable hard-top RF guise, the GT RS comes only in six-speed manual with the same 135kW/205Nm 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine powering the rear wheels as other variants of the MX-5.

It retains the black leather heated seats and Bose nine-speaker sound system as the GT, but adds Bilstein dampers, Brembo front brakes, a bracing strut between the front suspension towers and a DSC-Track mode.

The MX-5 was rated five stars by ANCAP in 2016, but that rating has since expired. The sports car still features front and side airbags, alerts for driver attention, lane keep, blind spots or rear-cross traffic, plus brake assist, seatbelt pretensioners and side-impact door beams.

The MX-5 comes with a five-year/unlimited kilometre warranty with five years of roadside assist, as well as capped servicing costs with intervals every 12 months or 15,000km, costing between $447 and $638, or an average of $544 each up to 7 years.

Racing video games, car-spotting on road trips, and helping wash the family VL Calais Turbo as a kid were all early indicators that an interest in cars would stay present in Chris’ life, but loading up his 1990 VW Golf GTI Mk2 and moving from hometown Brisbane to work in automotive publishing in Melbourne ensured cars would be a constant. With a few years as MOTOR Magazine’s first digital journalist under his belt, followed by a stint as a staff journalist for Wheels Magazine, Chris’ career already speaks to a passion for anything with four wheels, especially the 1989 Mazda MX-5 he currently owns. From spending entire weeks dissecting the dynamic abilities of sports cars to weighing up the practical options for car buyers from all walks of life, Chris’ love for writing and talking about cars means if you’ve got a motoring question, he can give you an answer.
