The 2.0D-S has all the charm of the diesel engine with the spec list of the S. Fitted with the same 2.0-litre boxer turbocharged diesel as the L, the S puts 108kW and 350Nm at your disposal, with a combined cycle fuel figure of 5.9L/100km.

At $39,740, it's a big jump from the L, but there's a lot more on board. As with the cars beneath it in the range, you get a six-speaker stereo with a 7.0-inch Starlink touchscreen, USB and Bluetooth. The S adds sat nav, LED headlights, electric heated front seats, leather trim, a huge sunroof, electric tailgate and a swag of safety gear. The S also picks up larger 18-inch alloy wheels with better Bridgestone tyres than the L's Yokohamas.

The big uplift in safety tech, adding EyeSight (active cruise control, forward-collision warning, autonomous emergency braking) and Vision Assist, which includes blind-spot monitor, lane-change assist, reverse cross traffic alert and side-view monitor.

The only catch on the safety front is that EyeSight is only available with the CVT; if you opt for the manual, it's deleted.

Peter grew up in a house in Western Sydney where automotive passion extended to white Sigmas and Magnas. At school he discovered "those" magazines that weren't to be found in the house. Magazines that offered him the chance to sit in the driver's seat of cars he’d never even heard of let alone seen. His path to rebellion was set - he would love cars, know cars and want to write about cars, much to his family’s disgust. They wanted him to be a teacher. He bought a series of terrible cars and lusted after Ford Escort Cosworths, the Alfa Romeo 164 Q and occasionally kicked himself for selling his 1977 Alfa GTV. From 1.0-litre three cylinders to roaring V12s, Peter has driven them all and can't wait to tell you all about it.
