We turn the spotlight on the Mercedes-Benz E400 and ask the questions to which you want the answers, including the biggest -- would you buy one?

What is it?

This is the latest and extremely handsome version of Mercedes-Benz's mid-size cabriolet having just had a major revamp including new styling and revised powertrain/equipment levels.

How much?

Our range topping E400 goes for $142,545 and is a replacement for the earlier E500 V8. Prices have actually been sharpened across the E Cabriolet and Coupe range spec adjusted.

What are competitors?

Not many actually, the new BMW 4-series coupe/cabriolet range, Audi's A5 cabriolets.

What's under the bonnet?

This one gets a 3.0-litre twin turbo petrol V6 with direct injection and variable cam timing among a raft of hi-tech engine componentry. Drive is to the rear wheels through a seven speed conventional auto transmission offering paddle shift and multi modes.

How does it go?

Whoosh, low 5.0 second sprints to 100km/h, superlative roll on acceleration, smooth as silk, lovely sound. Handling is equally as impressive with flat cornering and tenacious grip, sharp steering response, super tight turning circle.

Is it economical?

Amazingly good for a big, weighty cabrio with this amount of get-go. With efficiency boosting technology including auto stop/go and decoupling ancillaries, friction reduced engine components and slippery aerodynamics, the E400 clicks over a handy 7.7 litres/100km on premium.

Is it green?

Moderately.

Is it safe?

Five stars with a swag of active and passive safety kit and driver assistance features. Four phase safety arsenal safe driving, in a critical situation, in a crash and after the crash helps optimise safety equation.

Is it comfortable?

Superbly comfortable in the front, no good in the back because of turbulence with the roof down can't hear yourself think. Plenty of creature comforts, Bluetooth audio and phone, Harman Kardon audio, smart climate control, automatic LED headlights, radar cruise with brake function, 360 degree camera view, leather, agility control with multi modes, airscarf neck warmersbelt feeders in the front, multi media unit, easy entry rear seats, memory function for driver preferences and multi contour electric front seats.

What's it like to drive?

Superb. Goes like a scalded cat, corners flat or alternatively, supple and comfy depending on driver choice. Sounds good, quick out of the blocks, steering is sensational.

Is it value for money?

Nothing in this price range can be considered good value but against the competition, the E400 Cab is impressive.

Would we buy one?

Yes, love the style, particularly the front, the fabric roof, the drive feel. A class act.
