BMW shows the world how to drift and refuel at the same time

By Mitchell TulkMitchell Tulk

To break a drifting world record there's no time to stop for petrol.

In June of last year, the record for the world’s longest drift was broken by South African motor journalist, Jesse Adams who was behind the wheel of a Toyota 86.

The current record stands at 165km which took five hours and 46 minutes to complete.

BMW, who previously held the record is now looking to take the title back with its updated M5.

However, to achieve this over an eight-hour period, BMW wants to somehow refuel the car without stopping it.

To do so, the team behind this stunt have taken inspiration from the air force when they refuel planes mid-air.

This requires a second car to drift up along side the other with a person hanging out of the rear window readying to connect the fuel hose, how could that go wrong?

I wonder if thieves could use this to siphon petrol? I wonder if thieves could use this to siphon petrol?

A custom petrol tank was fitted in the boot while the back seats were also removed to make way for the refuelling point.

Up to 189 litres of petrol can be transferred from one sedan to the other in just 50 seconds.

BMW USA will be attempting to break the world's longest drift tomorrow. We’ll be sure to let you know the result.

Do you think this refuelling technique will be enough for BMW to take back the world’s longest 'drifty' title? Let us know in the comments.
