Stocked up! Volkswagen, Cupra, and Skoda looking strong for sales and supply in 2023

The Volkswagen T-Roc is the brand’s current best-seller, and VW says supply remains solid.

The three key brands under the Volkswagen Group Australia umbrella, VW, Skoda, and Cupra, are looking to build on a strong start to 2023 with improving supply and new models on the horizon.

While 2022 was a particularly rough year in Australia for the German automotive giant, it looks like it might - across its three marques at least - be able to return to the pre-pandemic sales figures of circa 50,000-plus.

Having sold 5472 Volkswagens across January and February compared to 3293 in the same period last year, the brand is already looking strong with supply for popular models like T-Roc expected to remain high, but even Skoda and new brand Cupra are expected to help lift figures.

Skoda’s Jan-Feb sales of 1324 are well ahead of the same period in 2022 (754), while Cupra starts 2023 with 359 sales, having not been launched until well into 2022.

With that 7550 sales so far, an increase in supply and the arrival of new models from Cupra, as well as a new generation of Amarok ute on the way, mean Volkswagen could well finish the year with more than 50,000 sales under its belt.

Skoda and VW totalled 37,448 in 2022, with 30,946 of those Volkswagens.

A Volkswagen Australia spokesperson told CarsGuide that, while there are still supply challenges around Golf and non-R all-wheel drive versions of Tiguan, models like the T-Roc are in such strong supply that it’s become, in February at least, the brand’s most popular model.

Industry data shows Volkswagen sold 661 T-Rocs last month, more than any other VW by hundreds of units, and catching it up to the T-Cross so quickly that both models are separated by two sales this year - T-Roc with 980, and T-Cross with 982.

Even for what is usually its most popular model, the Tiguan, Volkswagen recently told media that supply across 132TSI, 147TDI and 162TSI variants were in the magnitude of 3572 in stock, though supply is expected to be restricted from the end of Q1 onwards as restrictions in availability of 4Motion AWD systems hits home factories.

On T-Roc, the brand said “there are more than 1200 high-performance T-Roc R SUVs in the pipeline and 4313 T-Rocs of all types available”.

On the Cupra front, stock is improving as the brand picks up pace after a 2022 launch, and even the Leon VZe and Formentor VZe plug-in hybrids are expected to remain in good supply.

While it was initially expected supply would be relatively limited, it’s now clear that Cupra will be able to meet order quantities for customers even after the initial allocation of 100 cars across both models sold out.
