Mazda BT-50 Review, For Sale, Colours, Interior, Models & Specs

Mazda might be able to claim one of the longest lineages for the BT-50 – that is, if it hadn’t had three separate names over its history.

The B Series ute was Mazda’s first foray, way back in 1964, which was replaced in 1992 by the well-known Bravo. By then, Mazda’s ute had grown from its workhorse roots to a series of two- and four-wheel-drive utes, with the choice of single and dual cab configurations. With the advent of the BT-50 in late 2006, Mazda updated the name, style and performance of its ladder-framed ute.

These days, a pair of diesel engines work across a range of body styles and drive configurations, with prices starting at $35,520 for the BT-50 XS (4X2) up to $74,095 for the BT-50 Thunder (4X4).

Mazda BT-50 Q&As

Check out real-world situations relating to the Mazda BT-50 here, particularly what our experts have to say about them.

  • What tow vehicle or hybrid camper should I consider for after retirement?

The last decade of dual-cab four-wheel-drive utes have emerged as the tow-vehicles of choice, and you see them everywhere filling roles exactly like the one you have planned. Popular models include the Ford Ranger you’ve nominated, Toyota HiLux, Mazda BT-50, VW Amarok, Mitsubishi Triton, Nissan Navara and Isuzu D-Max. But there are also cheaper alternatives including makes like the South-Korean made Ssangyong and various Chinese brands like LDV and Great Wall.

Just make sure you know exactly how much you need to tow before making a decision as some of the cheaper models don’t have the same outright towing capacity and even if they do, some of them don’t have the engine performance to make towing as easy as it should be. For parts availability, the Toyota would be king in really remote areas, but any of the major brands are pretty well covered in Australia.

Meantime, don’t rule out ute-based wagons such as the Ford Everest, Isuzu MU-X, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport and Toyota Fortuna. These offer better ride comfort when unladen thanks to more sophisticated rear suspensions and most have as much or almost as much towing capacity as their ute brethren.

  • My Mazda BT-50 went into limp mode after normal towing

There are many reasons for a vehicle to enter limp-home mode. One of them, of course is transmission temperature, but there are lots of things being monitored, from the temperature of the engine oil, coolant temperature, oil level and even the operating temperature of the EGR valve (which is often water-cooled in vehicles like the Mazda).

The point being that even though the transmission entered limp-home mode, the actual problem may have been elsewhere, but the vehicle’s computer believed that shutting down much of the transmission’s functions would preserve and protect the rest of the driveline. Don’t forget, either, that there are many things – a failed solenoid, low fluid level, even a faulty wiring connection or earth – that can cause a transmission limp-home event beyond actual overheating.

  • The alternator in my 2021 Mazda BT-50 isn't fully charging the battery

There’s a very simple check you can do to see whether the battery or the charging system (alternator, regulator and wiring) is at fault here. With the engine running, place the probes of a multi-meter (switched to measure voltage) on the relevant battery terminals. If you see a figure of anywhere between 13.2 and 14.7 volts, the charging system is doing its job. You might need to rev the engine slightly off idle to see these numbers, but the voltage going into the battery should be in that range.

At this point, the battery becomes the main suspect, and a worn out battery will often neither hold a charge nor accept one.

  • Should I repair my Mazda BT-50's solenoids?

You should be guided by your mechanic’s quote for either outcome. In some cases, solenoids are relatively cheap to buy and don’t require too much labour to replace. But, depending on the vehicle, they can also be very expensive and require more or less a full transmission strip-down to remove and replace.

You also need to assess the condition of the whole transmission as putting new parts into a worn gearbox will only delay the inevitable.

Mazda BT-50 Interior

The BT-50's interior is typical of a ute, regardless of variant. Built for function, the Mazda parts of the interior are the small things that make the BT-50 feel more like an SUV inside than its Isuzu D-Max relative.

Controls are simple and mostly physical, save the somewhat dated touchscreen. There are places to keep things like phones, drinks and bottles secure in either the centre console, door cards, or either glovebox in front of the passenger.

Mazda BT-50 Engine

The Mazda BT-50, based on the Isuzu D-Max, also shares the Isuzu's choice of two engines: a 1.9-litre or 3.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel.

The 1.9-litre unit makes 110kW and 350Nm, while the 3.0 boasts 140kW but a bigger jump in torque at 450Nm.

Mazda BT-50 Fuel Consumption

The Mazda BT-50 is available in a number of variants and body types that are powered by Diesel fuel type(s). It has an estimated fuel consumption starting from 7L/100km for Ute /Diesel for the latest year the model was manufactured.

Year Body Type Fuel Consumption* Engine Fuel Type Transmission
2024 Ute 7L/100km 1.9L Diesel 6 SP AUTO

Mazda BT-50 Range

Mazda's claimed efficiency for the BT-50 with a 1.9-litre engine is 7.7L/100km with automatic transmission or 8.0L/100km for the 3.0-litre engine with an automatic as the only option.

It’s got a 76-litre fuel tank, which theoretically should mean a range of around 950km for the latter.

Mazda BT-50 Seats

The Mazda BT-50 has a standard seating layout, with two front seats and a three-seat second-row bench seat in dual-cab or freestyle-cab form.

As a single-cab, the BT-50 of course only features two seats.

Mazda BT-50 Speed

The BT-50 is available with a choice of two Isuzu-sourced engines, but neither is able to get the ute to 100km/h particularly quickly.

At an estimate, the ute should hit 100km/h in about 10 seconds from stand-still.

Mazda BT-50 Boot Space

The BT-50 doesn't have a boot, being a ute, but its standard tub is 1571mm long and 1530mm wide, while measuring 1120mm wide between the wheel arches and 490mm high tall.

Tray-back and cab-chassis versions are available from Mazda for the BT-50, but it's best to check the specifics with your dealer as sizes vary.
