2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee finally goes plug-in hybrid in Australia, but is the price right?

The PHEV Grand Cherokee is now the most expensive Jeep money can buy in Australia.

Jeep has revealed pricing for its long-awaited 4xe plug-in hybrid Grand Cherokee large SUV, joining an increasingly large club of plug-in premium models.

The Grand Cherokee 4xe only arrives in the top Summit Reserve trim level, priced at $129,950 before on-road costs. This places it some $10,500 higher than the equivalent seven-seater combustion version.

However, the 4xe will remain a five-seat only affair in Australia, which places it above the $98,450 two-row Overland.

It swaps out the 3.6-litre V6 from the rest of the Grand Cherokee range for a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine assisted by two electric motors on each axle for a total power output of 280kW/637Nm. It maintains the same eight-speed torque converter transmission as the rest of the Grand Cherokee range.

The hybrid system is backed by a 17.3kWh battery pack, which allows an NEDC-certified fully-electric driving range of 52km. Claimed fuel consumption is 3.2L/100km. The 4xe has a 7.4kW AC charger, allowing the battery to be topped up in less than three hours.

Additional efficiency is drawn from four-wheel regenerative braking, and purely electrically driven power steering and climate control.

The Grand Cherokee 4xe only arrives in the top Summit Reserve trim level.

The brand says the Grand Cherokee’s off-road chops are enhanced by this electric system being able to adjust torque directly to each wheel, and an ‘active transfer case’ facilitating low-range ability. It is also rated to tow 2722kg.

Other standard features include air suspension, a 10.1-inch multimedia unit with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, premium McIntosh 19-speaker audio system, 21-inch wheels, and the full set of active safety equipment.

The optional ‘Advanced Technology Group’ pack ($5500) adds a head-up display, wireless phone charging, night vision camera, and a 10.25-inch screen for the front passenger.
