Tesla’s heavily updated Model 3 arrived in late 2023 to much fanfare, but notably missing from the refreshed line-up was the all-wheel-drive Performance variant.
The brand, famously media-shy, has kept tight-lipped on the reasons for the delay on the Performance variant, although it did promise ‘something special’ for the updated version at the local launch event.
Now, though, new specifications – allegedly leaked from the South Korean Ministry of Environment – show significantly increased power outputs thanks to a new rear motor unit.
Power has jumped for this unit (code-named 4D2) to a whopping 303kW, while the front motor (code-named 3D3) remains the same, at 158kW, suggesting a roughly 461kW combined output, a significant boost on the existing Long Range version’s 366kW.
According to the documents, the new performance looks to maintain an 82kWh battery pack, the same capacity as the Long Range, although its weight remains the same as the outgoing Performance.
All of this adds up to an impressive looking package, and one that should have an even more ridiculous 0-100km/h acceleration time compared to the pre-update version, which was able to complete the sprint in 3.1 seconds.
You can also expect better handling, thanks to significant updates to the new Model 3, which include entirely reworked suspension components, a tweaked body with a lower drag coefficient and new tyres.
The exterior of the Performance has also been leaked before, with spy photos showing new wheel designs as well as a more aggressive rear spoiler and front splitter treatment, but otherwise a similar sort of subtle ‘sleeper’ appeal as previous performance models.
The interior remains a mystery, and while some have speculated the Performance variant will be renamed to ‘Ludicrous’, the Korean ministry documents appear to have it listed as ‘Model 3 Performance.’
As mentioned by Tesla at the Australian launch of the new Model 3, we can expect to see the Performance arrive before the end of 2024 if everything goes to plan.
