New 2024 GWM Tank 300 variant revealed with turbo V6-power: will the Tank 330 come to Australia to battle the Jeep Wrangler?

A more powerful, larger-engined version of the increasingly popular GWM Tank 300 SUV has been revealed in the brand’s home market of China.

The Tank 330, a turbocharged V6-powered version of the Tank 300, was uncovered in government documents looking like a high-spec version of the large SUV - but Australians shouldn’t get their hopes up just yet.

In true form, the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) is the reason local media - specifically CarNewsChina - was able to get details and images for the new model, as upcoming cars are published to its catalogue as they’re approved for sale in China.

With a 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 good for 265kW and 500Nm, the Tank 330 is gutsier than the turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol four-cylinder (with 162kW and 380Nm) but about as powerful and much less torquey than the four-cylinder hybrid (255kW and 648Nm).

Seemingly based on the Tank 300 Frontier Limited Edition, the Tank 330 comes with accessories like side skirts, the same alloy wheels as the Frontier, and even a roof-spoiler - though this isn’t likely functional.

In Australia, since its launch earlier in 2023 and its gradual build-up of sales, the Tank 300 totalled 1932 sales in its debut year. It outsold the spiritually similar but much pricier Jeep Wrangler (1105 units all year in 2023), and the Nissan Pathfinder (1401).

The Tank 330 is a turbocharged V6-powered version of the Tank 300.

With the Tank 300 being relatively new here, the GWM sub-brand is still finding its feet (albeit successfully, it seems) and hasn’t announced any new models just yet.

Confirming as much, a GWM Australia spokesperson told CarsGuide there’s currently no plan for the Tank 330, let alone any expansion of the Tank range in Australia in terms of new models.

“Regarding Tank 330, our focus currently is on continuing the successful local launch of Tank 300,” they said.

“We don’t have any plans at this stage to broaden the Tank 300 range but our local team is working hard on expanding the range of genuine GWM accessories available to customers on all models including the Tank 300.”
