Headlining BMW's new X2 range is the athletic M35i xDrive variant that promises more focus than its predecessor.
Fitted standard with all-wheel drive and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic for $92,900, before-on-road costs, the M35i xDrive scores the most powerful transverse tune of BMW's 'B48' 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder with 233kW/400Nm and a rorty exhaust.
Able to hit 100km/h in 5.4 seconds, the M35i gets 15mm lower springs and a bespoke chassis tune to harness its punch. The result is a grippy and planted car through the bends, though the ride can be fidgety especially with the optional 21-inch alloy wheels.

You do compromise rear seat room by picking the more style-forward X2 over the X1 with those over six foot likely to be uncomfortable. The boot is bigger (at 560L) thanks to the X2 being 54mm longer than the X1.
The front cabin is brimming with technology including wireless smartphone connectivity, BMW's latest 'iDrive 9' operating system and connected navigation.
Features include 20-inch alloy wheels, front limited-slip differential, M Sport suspension, 'Vernasca' leather upholstery, heated seats, power tailgate and adaptive LED headlights.
