The second-step up the 2022 Toyota RAV4 range ladder is the GXL, which has long been considered CarsGuide's pick of the range.

In 2022, the GXL remains a great option for the majority of buyers who can separate their wants from their needs.

That isn't to say the GXL is underequipped, but you might wish for a few additional inclusions over what comes standard. The GXL grade has: LED headlights, DRLs and front fog lights, roof rails, 18-inch alloy wheels, "premium" cloth seat trim, an 8.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, sat nav, DAB digital radio, five USB ports, keyless entry with proximity unlocking and push-button start, a wireless phone charger, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.

There's a solid array of safety gear, including a reversing camera, front and rear parking sensors, front AEB with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane keep assist, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.

There are three powertrains to choose from: 2.0L petrol CVT 2WD (127kW/203Nm), from $37,825 (all prices MSRP); the 2.5L petrol-electric hybrid CVT 2WD (160kW), from $40,325; and the 2.5L hybrid AWD (163kW), from $43,325.

The GXL models - on paper - offer exceptional efficiency, with the base petrol using 6.0L/100km, while the hybrid 2WD sips 4.7L/100km and the hybrid AWD claims 4.8L/100km.

At CarsGuide Matt has helped shape the video output of the business, while also playing a key role in management behind the scenes, and helping in-market new car buyers make the right choice by continually evolving CarsGuide's comparison reviews. Driving more than 100 cars a year seemed like a dream to Matt when he first started out, but now it's all just part of the job - a job he loves and plans to stay in for a long time to come.
