The Golf R-Line is the top of the non-performance Golf range, featuring sportier highlights at an MSRP of $37,490.

The R-Line continues to be powered only by a 1.4-litre four-cylinder turbocharged 110 TSI engine offering 110kW/250Nm paired only to an eight-speed torque converter automatic.

The R-Line includes the standard fit of a 10.25-inch digital dash cluster, a 10.0-inch multimedia touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, built-in sat-nav, and digital radio.

Elsewhere the R-Line includes sportier seat trim, a sportier body kit, and a flat-bottomed perforated leather steering wheel with touch panel controls.

Keyless entry, push-start ignition, tri-zone climate control, 18-inch alloys, and improved interior highlights also feature, alongside improved LED headlights with auto high-beams.

Like the rest of the range the R-Line features the full VW 'IQ Drive' active safety suite, which includes freeway speed auto emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane keep assist with lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring with rear cross traffic alert, safe exit warning, adaptive cruise control, and emergency assist.

Along with eight airbags and the standard array of electronic aids, this makes for a maximum five-star ANCAP safety rating to the 2019 standards.

The VW range is covered by a five year and unlimited kilometre warranty, with included roadside assist. To bring servicing costs down, the brand offers pre-packaged 'Care Plans' which covers servicing for either three or five years at the time of purchase at $1200 or $2100 respectively.

Despite studying ancient history and law at university, it makes sense Tom ended up writing about cars, as he spent the majority of his waking hours finding ways to drive as many as possible. His fascination with automobiles was also accompanied by an affinity for technology growing up, and he is just as comfortable tinkering with gadgets as he is behind the wheel. His time at CarsGuide has given him a nose for industry news and developments at the forefront of car technology.
